Groton, VT-  Alan G. "Joe" Dennis 74, of  Groton, VT died March 6, 2022 surrounded by his family at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care, Lebanon, NH.

Joe was born in St. Johnsbury, VT on June 25, 1947 to Eugene Franklin and Ida Angelia (Welch) Dennis.  He was a graduate of  Groton High School, Class of 1966.  He married Sandra "Sandy" Sheltra on October 26, 1968.

When Joe was a young boy, he served the Vermont Legislature as a page for one year and then served as a page for the Governor of Vermont the following year. He moved to Connecticut in 1966 to work at Pratt & Whitney. Joe then worked for Henry's Hardware in Forestville, CT, before becoming a co-owner of the Terryville (CT) True Value Hardware Store. Following that time, Joe began working for Plymouth Center School in maintenance and ultimately became the facilities director overseeing the Terryville Public Schools. He retired on June 14, 2017 and he and Sandy moved to Groton, VT.

Over the years, Joe enjoyed woodworking, snowmobiling,  gardening, hunting and fishing. He loved a good challenge on fixing things! In retirement, he loved riding his John Deere tractor while maintaining a well-manicured yard. He also loved to cook and enjoyed  "doctoring up" his recipes. Most of all family was everything to Joe. He loved family gatherings which included throwing huge annual Memorial Day parties with  multiple grills, more food than we needed and always an abundance of memories and fun!

Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandy of Groton, two daughters, Tina Brandt (Joseph Biengardo) of Hudson, FL and Tammy Dennis (Anthony Truiolo) of Bristol, CT and  seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He's also survived by two sisters, Linda G. Sparks and husband Frederick of Malone, NY and Kelly J. Joslin and husband David of North Haverhill, NH; a brother, Gary Dennis and wife Colleen of South Ryegate, VT; along with many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his best buddy and pup,  K.D.

Joe was predeceased by his father Eugene on January 27, 2000; his mother Ida on August 22, 2008 and by his son, Richard Dennis on December 5, 2021.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 19, at 11 AM at the Groton United Methodist Church with Mr. Brent Smith, officiating.
