Obituary

Groton, VT Andrew Jackson Smith, 92, of Powder Spring Road, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH. He was born in South Ryegate, VT, September 28, 1918, the son of Lewis Chester and Lottie Mae (Broadway) Smith. Andy married Elizabeth Peggy Welch on July 22, 1942. He served as a Technical Sergeant with U. S. Army Air Corps 348th AAF Base Unit during World War II from August 26, 1941 to October 27, 1945. Andy owned and operated Rockhaven Dairy Farm in Groton, VT. He also worked as a grain salesman with Forall Grain in Groton and E. W. Bailey Company in South Ryegate and Barnet, VT. Andy served the town of Groton as a selectman for 6 years. He was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church and a member of the ASCP Committee in Caledonia County. Above all, Andy was passionate about local history and took pride in caring for his animals. He was a proud Vermonter and World War II Veteran! He was predeceased by his wife Elizabeth Peggy Smith on November 7, 2003; a daughter, Pamela Peterson on March 28, 2008; a great grandson, Jonathan D. Smith on July 5, 2009; and a sister, Helen Mae Smith on January 26, 1997. Survivors include his children, Barbara Frost and husband Earl of Monroe, NH, Brent Smith and wife Pamela of Groton, and Brenda Powers and husband Craig of Groton; 10 grandchildren, Tina Peterson and fianc ` Jared Belyea of Piermont, NH, Marlo Colbeth and husband Rusty of Williston, VT, Marcella Frazer and husband Benjamin of Bluffton, SC, Steven Frost of Chicago, IL, Adam Smith and wife Tammy Ross-Smith of Littleton, NH, Joshua Smith, Aaron Smith and wife Alissa, Jordan Smith and wife Sara, Todd Powers, and Tonya Powers, all of Groton; nine great grandchildren, Kayleigh, Abigail, and Grace Colbeth, Jake and Mark Frazer, Andrew Jackson, Christopher T., Amelia and Ajax Smith; a son-in-law, Gordon Peterson of Wells River, VT; and several nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be on Wednesday, June 15th at 3 PM at the Groton Village Cemetery, Scott Highway, Groton, VT, with Pastor Candace Ricker officiating.
