Aiken, SC – Anita R. Smith, 89, of Harbor Chase of Aiken Retirement Community, died Monday, March 18, 2019, at Aiken Regional Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Anita was born in New London, CT, April 1, 1929, the youngest child of Michael and Sadie (Kozlin) Steinberg.  She was predeceased by her siblings Louis Steinberg, Selma Steinberg, and Ida Levy.  Anita attended the University of Pennsylvania and graduated in 1950 from the Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing in New London, CT as a registered nurse. She worked as a registered nurse in New London and moved to Houston where she worked as an operating room nurse at MD Anderson Hospital for approximately 30 years.

Anita loved baseball and after her hospital workday concluded she worked for the Houston Astro's from their inception as the Colt 45's.

She married Robert Gilchrist Smith on July 16, 1985, and they lived in Texarkana, AR, Gulf Breeze, FL, finally retiring permanently to Aiken.  Her husband Bob predeceased her on April 1, 2013.

Survivors include Stephen and Liz Levy, Michelle and Michael Morrison, Marda Levy, their families, additional nieces, nephews, friends Tom and Cristi Williams, and caregiver Yolanda Jones.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at 1 PM, in the North Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, NH.
