Obituary

McIndoe Falls, VT-  Barbara Jessie (Thorburn) Stebbins, 84, formerly of McIndoeFalls, died on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the Maple Lane Nursing Home, Barton, VT.

Barbara was born in Walden, VT on May 14, 1931, to Andrew and Helen (Allen) Thorburn of Norwich.  She graduated from Hanover (NH) High School, Class of 1948.  On December 24, 1954, she married Calvin G. Stebbins. In 1979, they moved from Westminster, VT to McIndoe Falls.

Barbara worked at the First Vermont Bank and Trust in Bellows Falls, VT.  In 1979, she began working at the Savers Bank in Littleton, NH as a loan arranger.  At one time, she had her own office business where she did mimeographing, typing and bookkeeping.

Over the years, Barbara attended St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Norwich, VT and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodsville, NH.  She was elected to office for the National Episcopal Church Women.  Barbara was a Girl Scout leader and was the superintendent of Sunday school in Westminster at the United Church of Christ.

In her spare time, she loved downhill skiing as-well-as to waterskiing, doing handwork, and flower and vegetable gardening.  She was noted for her baked beans and homemade rolls.  She and Calvin were accomplished ballroom dancers.  She loved baseball and was a devoted mother and grandmother with a great sense of humor.  Barbara worked diligently for social justice, with a focus on concerns for women and children.

She was predeceased by her husband, Calvin Stebbins on November 14, 2003.

She is survived by three daughters, Cathy Boivin of Charlestown, NH, Patricia Williams and husband Gill of Bradford, VT, and Candace Hayes of McIndoe Falls; five grandchildren, Courtney and Jay Fisher, Maggie and Rachel Hayes, and Dana Sager; six great grandchildren, Eryll, Nina, Ewen, Elyza, Hadley, and Christopher; a sister, Sheila LaBounty and husband Gordon of Bow, NH; a brother, Matthew Thorburn and wife Nicole of Vancouver, WA; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 14th at 10 AM at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 262 Main Street, Norwich, VT.
