Betty Jean Proctor, 82, passed away on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH after suffering a heart attack Tuesday evening. She had battled defiantly both severe diabetes and Parkinson s disease and was recovering from several months of recent hospitalization in the home of her son Kevin, of Ryegate, VT, who was at her bedside at the time of her death. Mrs. Proctor was born March 6, 1930 in Blackwell, OK, the daughter of John David and Mary Ellen (Jackson) Wilson. As Betty was beginning grade school, the family was caught up in the throes of The Great Depression and The Dust Bowl. They relocated from Blackwell to Aurora, MO where her father found employment in the flour mill of the Majestic Milling Company. The mill burned down in July 1940, and in September of that year the family moved back to OK, settling in El Reno and initially living with Betty s grandmother Wilson. Betty s father found employment at the flour mills in El Reno, built a home here, and Betty spent the remainder of her life in El Reno until her recent relocation to Vermont. As part of the Trades & Industries program in high school, Betty began working in the business office of South-western Bell Telephone Co. (now AT&T). She continued to work there for several years after graduation from El Reno High School in 1947. She attended business college and during her work career held numerous secretarial and administrative positions with various mortgage companies as well as Xerox Corp. Betty also supplemented her growing family s income working in food service, and was the hostess at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in Nichols Hills for many years. She had learned a great deal about food service from working alongside her mother, who operated two cafes in El Reno during World War II into the 1950s. In later years, Betty worked as a caregiver-companion, and her last job which she so thoroughly enjoyed was as a docent at the Canadian County Historical Museum in El Reno. Betty Jean Wilson married Kenneth Jay Proctor on December 23, 1949, with whom she had four children. Betty was an avid collector of antiques-especially vintage glass-and had a keen interest in family genealogy and local history. She shared a special bond with daughter DeAnn, and with DeAnn s children Brynna, Jay and Michael Riley whom she helped raise and who lived and cared for her during her years of declining health. Mrs. Proctor was preceded in death by her parents and husband Kenneth. She is survived by her children: son, Richard Kent Proctor and wife Vicki; daughter, Mary DeAnn Proctor Riley (all of El Reno, OK); son, Kevin Jay Proctor and partner Ron Cressy of Ryegate, VT; and son, Kyle Reydon Proctor and wife Teisha of St. Johnsbury, VT. Survivors also include her brother, John David Wilson, Jr. and wife Clydell of Bakersfield, CA; sister-in-law Margerie Ables of Winter Haven, FL; eight grandchildren, Trisha Ann Murray and husband Jay, Richard Shane Proctor and wife Mindy, Jay Quentin Riley, Michael William Riley, Brynna DeAnn Riley, Landon Kyle Proctor, Logan Blake Proctor and Lauren Kate Proctor; and three great-grandchildren, Brady Shane Proctor, Madison Scott Murray and Miles Ken Murray. Mrs. Proctor also leaves behind three nieces and six nephews. Burial will be in El Reno Cemetery with arrangements pending.
