Obituary

Piermont, NH- Brian W. Markee, 60, of Sanborn Circle, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 29th after a long struggle with cancer.  He was born on July 31, 1961 in Meriden, Connecticut; the son of Dale and Nancy Markee of West Lebanon.  Brian graduated from Lebanon High School and attended UNH and Plymouth State College.

Brian worked for many years at Dartmouth College, most of them at Baker-Berry Library.  He liked his co-workers and enjoyed being part of the library community.  Among the many projects Brian worked on, he found book repair to be the most rewarding.  In recent years he began working on a project that really piqued his interest: assisting in the digitization of the Library Archives' photographic collection.  Brian was interested in local history and was fascinated with the snippets of Dartmouth and Hanover history that the photographs revealed.

In his leisure time Brian preferred to be active.  He was an avid golfer and for years was a member of the Blackmount Country Club in North Haverhill, NH.  Brian welcomed the challenges of the course and enjoyed the times spent with golfing buddies there. He was very proud of the two club member championships he won in 2015 and 2017.

By far Brian's favorite leisure activity was hiking, either with hiking buddies or by himself.  As his condition worsened gradually over the past year, Brian still walked and hiked mountain trails as often as he could.  Last November as pain began to be an issue, Brian made what would be his final climb, the formidable Mt. Imp.  After that hike, his pain became chronic, and Brian referred to it ruefully as "the Imp that made me a gimp".

When Brian wasn't hiking or golfing, he was rooting for his favorite teams: the Patriots, Bruins and Red Sox.  Even to the end, Brian could be heard cursing an NHL referee's "lousy call" or bemoaning Pastrnak's poor defensive skills. It was good to see that the little pleasures in life stayed with Brian throughout his illness.

Brian had an easygoing manner and an irreverent sense of humor (see Mt. Imp, above).  He was shy but personable and people felt comfortable around him.  He was thoughtful and generous to family, friends and co-workers.  Brian was very close to his family and always looked forward to holiday gatherings with them.  But he also enjoyed solitude and nature.  Brian preferred that people celebrate his life by going outside and reveling in nature.  Brian was a sweet soul who will be sorely missed.

Brian is survived by his partner of 30 years, Mary Guerin of Piermont; his parents Nancy and Dale Markee of West Lebanon; his sister Deidre (and husband Tom); nephews Evan (and wife Brittany) and Cameron Rothfuss, and grand-nephew Paul, all of South Portland, Maine.  He is also survived by his aunts, Dorothy Saban, Linda Ricker, Betty Markee, Ruth Markee and Gail Markee-Begin; and uncles, William Lajousky and Thomas Markee; and many cousins.  All reside in Maine.

Per Brian's request, there will be no service or calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North Country Home Health & Hospice Agency, 536 Cottage St., Littleton, NH  03561.

Brian's family would like to thank all the hospice nurses who helped Brian during his final weeks, especially Jon Place and Stephanie Ricci.  Jon was Brian's blunt and humorous case doctor.  Stephanie was there on Brian's final day making sure he spent his final hours in comfort and peace. Brian's family would also like to thank Wes Banash, a friend and colleague of Brian's.  Wes wrote a moving and funny tribute to Brian that he shared with Brian's co-workers and family.  It really captured Brian's generosity and humor.
