Orford, NH C. Henry Andrews, Jr., 96, formerly of Dublin Road, died peacefully with his family at his bedside, March 19, 2011, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH. He was born in Laconia, NH March 31, 1914, the oldest of eight children to Clarence H. and Esther (Hildreth) Andrews, Sr., and was a member of the first graduating class of Orford Academy in 1932. He was a lifelong Upper Valley resident where he worked as a mechanic at Perry s Garage in Bradford, VT and later went on to work in the maintenance department at Dartmouth College. He also was a member of the Citizen s Conservation Corp (CCC) working in the Gale River area. During World War II he worked as a crew chief for Chance Vought Aircraft in Stratford, CT, helping to produce the Corsair F-4U fighter/bomber for the war effort. While working at Vought, he became acquainted with Charles Lindbergh and Igor Sikorsky, both early aviation pioneers. He also repaired television sets and radios. He drove truck for Ballam and Knight hauling food from the Boston area to local area mink farmers. He is a former member of the Orford Fire Department and served as an EMT with the FAST Squad. Henry is also a former member of the Orford School Board. Henry enjoyed the outdoors hunting, fishing, and was a member of the NRA. He loved going with the boys to the hunting camp on Stonehouse Mountain and in more recent years on the hill (The family homestead on Andrews Road). Smart s Mountain was his mountain where many memories were made. He was an early believer in and practiced recycling before it was fashionable. Henry married Thelma M. (Ryea) Andrews on February 22, 1941 and she predeceased him on February 13, 2008. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Charlotte Andrews and Erma Ferentenous and a brother, Donald Andrews. Surviving family includes a son, Clarence H. Andrews III and wife Lucy of Dorchester, NH; three daughters, Beverly Andrews Potry and husband Arthur of Plum Island, MA, Georgette Underhill and husband Eric of Piermont, NH, and Georgiana Penny Hughes of Arizona; eight grandchildren and many great grandchildren; a brother, Gordon Andrews of Norwich, VT; four sisters, Estena Gieseking of Ashaway, RI, Gertrude Ackerson of Chuluota, FL, Genevieve Gomo of Norwich, VT and June Cummings of Bradford, VT, along with several nieces and nephews. There will be no public calling hours. A graveside service will be on Saturday, June 4, at 1 PM at the Orford Street Cemetery, Orford, NH. Memorial contributions can be made to either the Orford FAST Squad or to the Orford Meals on Wheels Program.
