South Ryegate, VT -- Calvin Robert Frost, 93, a lifelong resident of South Ryegate died peacefully, on Saturday, September 1, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones, at the Atkinson Residence in Newbury, VT, where he resided for the past two years, and received attentive, compassionate, and loving care from the staff.
Calvin was born in South Ryegate on December 1, 1924, a son of Joseph Ray and Mary (Heartz) Frost, and graduated from Groton High School, Class of 1943.
He began his working career at the Tyler Farm in West Newbury, VT, later moving on to the Zambon Granite Company in South Ryegate. In 1951, he began a long and successful career as a self-employed truck driver. He was the owner/operator of his own business hauling granite out of Barre and South Ryegate, VT throughout New England.
He married Joyce I. Lackie on November 23, 1949, in Woodsville, NH, and they had 65 remarkable years together. In their retirement years they traveled cross-country and enjoyed cruises. They spent countless hours watching their granddaughters sporting events at high school and collegiate soccer games and track meets all over Vermont and New York. Calvin was a beloved husband, wonderful father, grandfather, and great grandfather, and a devoted son and brother. His smile and kind, thoughtful nature touched all those fortunate enough to know him.
Calvin was a devoted, active life member and Elder of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church. His deep faith and devotion was an important part of his life. His rich, strong voice led countless hymns through the years.
Calvin and Joyce wintered at Citrus Hills Park in Dade City, FL from 1997-2014. They played endless games of shuffle board, and cards with their many friends and had shared the honor as "Citizens of the Year" within the park. He loved his neighbors and was always the first to lend a hand. He loved his family dearly and was always ready for a road trip, reunion, or restaurant. He was a proud Vermonter, loving country music, as well as restoring two antique Farmall tractors.
He now joins the love of his life, Joyce, who had predeceased him on November 26, 2014; and son, Robert William Frost on February 18, 1953; a sister, Pauline Adamese and a brother, Ellsworth Frost.
He is survived by a daughter, Alison J. Martin-Lindstrom and husband Keith Lindstrom of Beaumont, TX; two sons, Richard C. Frost and wife Florence of South Ryegate and Kevin J. Frost and wife Cherie of Barre, VT; four grand children, Brandon M. Martin of Hollywood, FL, Craig S. Martin and wife Tina of Worcester, MA, Mallory E. Frost and husband Gareth Bird of Sydney, Australia, and Kelsey L. Frost of Saratoga, NY; a great grandson, Craig Calvin Martin of Worcester; a sister, Bernadine Rodgers of Edwardsburg, MI; two brothers, Charles R. Frost of Barre and Hamilton R. Frost of South Ryegate; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Calling hours will be Thursday, September 6th, from 6 to 8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH.
A memorial service will be on Friday, Sept 7th, at 1 PM at the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church with Rev. Harvey Bartlett officiating. He will be assisted by the Rev. Carol Ann Barker, former pastor of the Church, and the Rev. Dr. Howard Gaston.
Burial will follow in the Pinehurst Cemetery, South Ryegate.
