Haverhill, NH- Carl Matthew Welch, 86, of Cemetery Road, died on August 17, 2008, at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. Carl was born on July 25, 1922, in Waterbury, VT, to James and Mabel (Collins) Welch. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was on Iwo Jima at the time the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi. For the last 59 years he had worked at the Bradford Veneer Mill and had continued to work full time until August 8, 2008. He was married to Rose Brown on July 26, 1987. Carl was a longtime Upper Valley resident, having lived in Bradford, VT, Piermont, NH, and Haverhill. He thoroughly enjoyed work, mowing his lawn, chopping wood and dancing. He was a member of VFW Post #5245 in North Haverhill and of Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville. He was predeceased by his brothers and sisters. Carl is survived by his wife, Rose Welch of Haverhill; his daughter Jayne Eddy and husband Bill, of Malone, NY; his son Mike Welch of Barre, VT: six grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be on Thursday, August 21, 2008 from 6-8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville. A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 22, at 2 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, with burial to follow in Ladd Street Cemetery, Haverhill.
