Obituary

Newbury, VT- Constance Connie Bixby, 83, died on August 20, 2008, at Haven Health in St. Albans, VT, following a period of failing health. Connie was born on June 10, 1925, in Burlington, VT, to Dr. Jesse M. and Theo (Way) Solomon. She married Roy E. Bixby on September 14, 1946. She was a graduate of Faulkner School of Nursing in Jamaica Plain, MA, and worked as a Registered Nurse at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH, and at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, from where she retired in November 1987. Connie was a member of the First Congregational Church of Newbury and the Ladies Aide of the Church. She served on the board of the Frances Atkinson Home, was the health officer for the Town of Newbury, a Justice of the Peace, and was in charge of the Newbury food shelf. Connie always took time to assist those in need within her community and beyond. She had a fondness for animals, especially cats, and enjoyed her flower and vegetable garden. She spent many relaxing summers at her camp in Alburgh, VT. She was predeceased by her husband, Roy E. Bixby on February 2, 1987; and by her sister June Chamberlin and brother James M. Solomon. She is survived by her son, Lt. Commander (USN Retired) Roy K. Bixby and wife Jean of Alburgh; a granddaughter Catherine Bixby and great grandson Zachary Bixby of Virginia Beach, VA; a step-granddaughter, Leah Enters and husband Karl and two step-great granddaughters, Mikaela and Marin Enters of Richardson, TX; a step-grandson, Carlton Powell and wife Noemi of Gloucester, VA and two step-great granddaughters Megan Powell of Georgia and Jennifer Powell of Hampton, VA; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends, Ken and Barbara Welch of Newbury. Calling hours will be on Sunday, August 24, from 5-7 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. The funeral service will be Monday, August 25, at 1 PM at the First Congregational Church of Newbury with burial to follow in Oxbow Cemetery.
