Obituary

Cynthia Ann Burroughs, 77, of Woodsville, NH, passed away on March 26, 2022. Born in Woodsville on May 23, 1944, to the late Rex and Alice (Ricker) Burroughs, she was one of nine children. Cynthia grew up in Newbury, VT and began her education at the Town Farm School House. After graduating from Newbury High School, Cynthia pursued post-secondary degrees in history, education, and archeology. She earned a bachelor's and a master's degree from Johnson State College as well as master's degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and Wesleyan University. Her love of learning inspired her to make teaching her life's work. At the time of her retirement, she was a history teacher at South Windsor High School in CT and had spent over 30 years in the field.

With her adventurous spirit, her sense of humor, and her fleet of vintage Volkswagen Bugs, Cynthia was one of a kind. She was a world traveler who made many special memories on trips with family and friends over the years. She was a wealth of knowledge, sharing the history behind each destination. She was also an outdoor enthusiast who loved whitewater rafting, canoeing, and camping. She relished her summers on Lake St. George in Maine where she spent her days teaching Vacation Bible School, boating, and reading.

Friends and family will remember Cynthia as a strong, independent, and patriotic individual who would do anything for the people close to her. She was a devoted member of the West Newbury Congregational Church where she sang in the choir alongside her sister Virginia. She had a giving spirit, contributing not only to the church but also to police, firefighters, Native American charities, and Veterans. She loved spending time with family and was always ready for a good chat. Cynthia's lively presence will be greatly missed.

Cynthia leaves behind several loved ones, including her sisters Barbara Thornton of Woodsville, NH, Virginia (Allen) Fuller of Newbury, VT, Deborah (David) White of North Hartland, VT, Elizabeth (Glenn) Ackroyd of Skowhegan, ME, and Valerie (William) Massey of Chattanooga, TN; brothers Roland (Rachel) Burroughs of Underhill, VT, and Richard (Shirley) Burroughs of Woodstock, VT as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. She was predeceased by her brother Dale Burroughs and her brother-in-law Donald Thornton.
