Wells River, VT David C. Stevens, 90, passed away on October 22, 2009, at his home in Wells River. David was born March 4, 1919, in St. Albans, VT, the son of Frederick B. and Mina (Chynoweth) Stevens. He grew up in Newport, VT and graduated at the top of his class from Newport High School in 1936. He studied mechanical engineering at the University of Vermont. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and helped establish state parks in Vermont and New Hampshire, which contributed to his lifelong interest in conservation. He married Dorothy E. Gibson on August 25, 1940. He worked as a mechanic and electrician for Vermont Transit Bus Company in Burlington, VT for 13 years. They had three children, Albert, Philip, and Susan, all born in Burlington. In 1953 they purchased the Gibson dairy farm in Wells River and moved there to care for Dorothy s parents and manage the farm with up to 125 head of Ayrshire cows. In 1964 their son Albert became a partner in the farm, which they operated until 1985. David served for over 33 years as Wells River Village Trustee, much of the time as chairman. He was involved in the installation of a new sewage system for the village. David was responsible for testing the village water every morning for many years. He also served on various committees, such as OSIP and WRAP. From 1965 David served on the White River Conservation District Board as a member supervisor, many years as Secretary. He received an award for outstanding service. He served as District Representative to the Vermont Association of Conservation Districts, several years as Treasurer, and also served on State Conservation Council. David was a member of the Green Mountain Dairy Promotion, served several years as treasurer and was in charge of Jet Shake Milk machine promotion activities. He also served on the statewide Dairy of Distinction Program. In 1990 he received the George D. Aiken award as Vermont Agriculturist of the Year. David was an avid reader and had a large collection of books. David is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy, his son Philip and wife Sonja (Kallberg) of Williston, VT, daughter Susan Lemmon and friend Lee Marsland of Newfane, NY, daughter-in-law Barbara (Brothers) Stevens of Wells River, nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Albert on November 10, 2005. A calling hour will be at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH on Saturday, October 24, from 6:30-7:30 PM. A funeral service will be held at The Congregational Church of Wells River UCC, 76 Main Street, Wells River, on Sunday, October 25 at 2:00 PM, with Rev. Betty Ann Abild, officiating.
