North Haverhill, NH – Donald Clarence Phelps, 83, of Lime Kiln Road, and formerly of South Ryegate, VT, died on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at Cottage Hospital, Woodsville, NH. He was born in South Ryegate, VT, February 21, 1929, a son of Clarence E. and Violet G. (Lee) Phelps. He served with the US Army in Korea, and later worked for the US Postal Service. For many years he worked at the White River Jct., VT Post Office before retiring as the Postmaster in Bradford, VT. Donald was a member and former Trustee of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church and is a former member and Chief of the South Ryegate Fire Dept., along with being a member of the National Postmasters Association of the United States. He married the former Virginia A. Russell on September 13, 1963. He was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Phelps and Pearl Morrison; and three brothers, Raymond, Gordon, and Durwood Phelps. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Virginia Phelps of North Haverhill; two sons, Gordon Peterson of Ryegate, VT and Ronald Peterson of Groton, VT; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a sister, Miriam Elliott of South Ryegate, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Following Donald's wishes, there will be no public services scheduled at this time.
