Obituary

Bath, NH Doris Stymest Whitcomb, a lifelong resident of Bath, died peacefully at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH on January 28, 2009, departing a well-lived life that spanned more than a century. Born September 17. 1903, she was the only child of Benjamin Stymest and Desdemona Bailey Stymest. Doris was a graduate of Bath High School. While still a teenager, she worked in Bath s brick store, owned by her father and, at that time, known as The Stymest Company. She married Harry D. Whitcomb of Bath. After the death of her father in 1931, she and her husband ran the store until their retirement in 1962. Harry passed away in 1965. She enjoyed every aspect of working in the store and serving her community. Doris served on the town Planning Board and was involved in the organization of the town s bicentennial celebration in 1965. She was a contributor to the 1965 town history, Historical Notes of Bath. Later, Doris enjoyed participating in the Bath Congregational Church s annual sale of homebaked treats and handicrafts to the busloads of fall foliage tourists. A woman of many interests, Doris was an excellent pianist and homemaker, often using her knitting and sewing skills, to the delight of her family. She always enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and time spent with her grandchildren. In her last years, Doris especially enjoyed sitting on the back porch on summer days with her cat, Tipper, while she solved her crosswords or chatted with visitors. Doris is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Fenno of Montpelier, VT and Carol Smith of Bath; three granddaughters, Shelley Fenno Quinn and husband Charles of Columbus, OH, Lynn Fenno Maxwell and husband John of Exeter, NH, and Gwen L. Fenno of Essex Junction, VT; three great grandchildren, David, Alison and Roslyn Maxwell; and one great great grandchild, Charlotte E. Clay. A service is being planned for later in the spring with date and time to be announced. Burial will be in the Bath Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bath Congregational Church, c/o Mr. Everett Russ, Pettyboro Road, Bath, NH 03740, or to the charity of one s choice.
