Obituary

Haverhill, NH- Dorothy May Spies, 97, of Parish House Lane, died on Saturday, February 6, 2010 at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH. She was born to Harold John and Ada (Colson) Thompson on March 26, 1912, in Grays, England. After coming to America, her family resided in New Jersey. Dorothy graduated from Rosedale High School in Rosedale, NJ and from Rutgers School of Landscape Design. Following graduation, she worked in a bank in Newark, NJ and as a landscape gardener and for Forbes Gardening Center, also in NJ. She was a past president of the New Jersey Garden Club. On December 18, 1942, she married Douglas Spies and he predeceased her in 1978. After spending almost her entire life in New Jersey, she moved to Haverhill in 1985 where she was a founding member of the Haverhill Garden Club. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, UCC. When she wasn t gardening, she enjoyed reading. Along with her husband, she was predeceased by a grandson Nicky Brinker on December 25, 1988; and by her siblings, Irene Rousch, Peggy Krebs, and John Thompson. She is survived by her daughter Abigail Kennedy and husband Bradley of Bath, NH; her grandson Zack Brinker; one niece, three nephews, cousins; and her care-giver Daphne Williams of Haverhill. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 from 4-6 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH . Her funeral service will be Thursday, February 18, at 2 PM at the First Congregational Church of Haverhill UCC, 120 School Street, Haverhill, NH, with Reverend David Pendleton, officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Pettyboro Cemetery, Bath, NH. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, Haverhill, NH 03765.
