Woodsville, NH- Douglas Kurt Olsen, 64, died on Sunday, August 5, 2012 at the Veteran s Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. Doug was born in Springfield, MA, March 18, 1948 and grew up in North Haverhill, NH, the son of Morris and Helen (Yost) Olsen. A 1966 graduate of Haverhill Academy, Doug attended Berlin Technical College before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1967 and served four years in the service, stationed in Florida and Germany. Doug also served in Vietnam during the summer of 1968. Doug loved anything with motors and enjoyed working in his machine shop. He was an avid NASCAR fan and delighted in being a part of his son and grandson s racing careers. Doug had a passion for building race engines and loved the challenge of tinkering on them to find the best performance. Doug also enjoyed garden tractor pulls and helped start the Haverhill Mini-Pullers, a local pulling league. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Morris and Helen Olsen; and a brother, Harley Olsen. Survivors include his sister, Linda Olsen Smith of North Haverhill; a son, Michael Olsen and wife Vicki of North Haverhill; three daughters, Michelle Olsen Belton and husband Scott of Steamboat Springs, CO, Heather Olsen Rochefort and husband David of Littleton, NH, and Amy Olsen Kopp and husband Keith of Lancaster, NH; and nine grandchildren, Ryan, Garrett, Spencer, Peyton, Elizabeth, Anna, Kate, Matthew, and Emily. The family wishes to acknowledge the Veteran s Administration Medical Center for the excellent care and compassion provided to Doug during his courageous battle with cancer. At his request, there will be no calling hours. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2012 at 1 PM at the Mountain Lakes Lodge.
