Obituary

Peacham, VT – Dwight Hamilton Cooley, 94, died on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at the Maple Lane Nursing Home, Barton, VT. He was born in Lisbon, August 31, 1916, the son of Earl D. and Bertha A. (Johnson) Cooley. Dwight graduated from Peacham Academy in 1933 and attended Washington Lee University in Lexington, VA in 1934. From December 16, 1942 to December 31, 1945, he served in the US Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged, having achieved the rank of Sergeant T-4. For 25 years, Dwight was the Postmaster in Passumpsic, VT. He and his wife, Constance (Averell), to whom he was married on May 31, 1952, enjoyed traveling across the United States and abroad. They wintered in Arizona and summered in Peacham. He was a longtime member of the Peacham Congregational Church. Dwight was predeceased by his wife, Connie, on August 14, 2002; and two siblings, Howard J. Cooley and wife Dorothy and Ruth E. Dean and husband Warren. He is survived by his sister, Iris K. Morrison and husband Charles of West Barnet, VT; his brother, Boyd E. Cooley and wife Elsie of North Fort Myers, FL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be on Saturday, June 11th at 2 PM, at the Passumpsic Cemetery, Waterford, VT with Rev. Dr. Howard Gaston officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Peacham Library, Peacham, VT 05862.
