Edward
Johnson
November 2, 1918 – May 6, 2018
Edward Johnson, a former teacher in Vermont and New Hampshire, passed away at the Bailey Center in St. Augustine, Florida on May 6, 2018, at the age of 99 just short of six months before his 100th birthday. Edward was born in Boston, Massachusetts on November 2, 1918 and was the son of the late Herman and Jennie Johnson. Edward was the loving and beloved husband for 65 years of the late Elizabeth (Murphy) Johnson, also a native Bostonian. The Edward and Elizabeth Johnson Family includes their six children and respective spouses who survived them and are—Robert Johnson of Medford, MA and Diane; Susan (Johnson) Goldin of Springfield, VA and Herbert; Carolyn Johnson de Gomez of Houston, TX and Puerto Plata, DR and Bayardo; Betsy (Johnson) Giroux of Cary, NC and Peter; Edward Johnson of Durham, NC and Donna; and Elizabeth (Johnson) Clark of Bath, NH.
Edward and Elizabeth also had seventeen grandchildren—Joey, Katie, Michael, Sarah, Jennifer, Jessica, Tisha, Jeffrey, Eric, Carolina, Bryan, Shawn, Mark, Elizabeth, Kelly Ann, Charlie, and Andrew. Edward and Elizabeth also had thirteen great grandchildren who are Parker, Piper, Elora, Lucas, Tyler, Haley, Celeste, Eliza, Nolan, Miles, Rayan, Maya, and Aiden.
Edward graduated from Boston Latin School, a school where Benjamin Franklin had studied hundreds of years before. Edward also graduated from the legacy Tufts College, now Tufts University. Edward received teaching certification from Plymouth State College (NH) and further certification from St. Michael's College (VT). Edward taught science, social studies, and English in Bristol, NH and for many years afterwards was a huge mentor and teacher at the JFK Middle School in Winooski, VT from where he retired.
Edward and his dear wife, Elizabeth, had a tremendous passion for travel, visiting most states in the United States with their children, Canada, and Mexico. Edward and Elizabeth also took trips to the Caribbean and many voyages to Europe including a trip with all of their children. Edward spoke five languages fluently and was especially adept at citing Latin phrases including his favorites, "Videre est credere" and in later years "Existimo ergo sum".
Having lived in other states, Edward and Elizabeth Johnson chose Vermont as the place to be. The folks saw St. Michael's College, Champlain College, and UVM as becoming an integral part of family home life for their children which they did become. Edward, wife Elizabeth, and family resided in Williston, VT for two years and then built a house in Shelburne, VT in 1970 where they called home until the 1980s when Edward and Elizabeth migrated back and forth to St. Augustine until 2013. During their migration, they spent the summers in Vermont and the winters in Florida. In 2015, Edward's wife, Elizabeth, sadly the love of Edward's life passed away.
Edward can be remembered in many ways beyond being an outstanding human being, an individualist, and a remarkable teacher. Edward was a superb speaker, a deep thinker, a loving soul, a prolific athlete who particularly enjoyed playing squash with Harold Zimman who the Tufts University Athletic Field is named after, tennis, baseball, and football. He maintained a slender build throughout his life. Edward simply loved life; he loved food and drink, he loved lobster and pot roast, entertainment, television, dancing, singing, Broadway plays, intellectual discussion that was to the point, local and world news, being a grammarian, listening to sports and music, and reading until he became legally blind. Edward's favorite song was "Let the Rest of the World Go by". Edward loved the Ocean breeze and long fast-paced walks on the sands along Crescent Beach. Edward, there is no doubt that your greatest feeling was the love you shared with your wife. Next to that, your greatest feeling that shines above everything else eternally is the extension of your love and having made a difference individually in every person's life you touched. Edward, know that we all miss you so very much, thank you for everything, love you more than anything in the world, and that life for us will never be the same. A service at the Bath, NH Congregational Church is occurring on May 15th at 1:00 pm followed by burial in the Bath Cemetery Family Plot.
