Haverhill , NH- Ella Mabel (Bigelow) Lang, 95, formerly of Court Street, died on Monday, March 26, 2018, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH.
Ella was born in Center Haverhill, NH on May 9, 1922, to Leon Hector and Mary Glory (Plant) Bigelow. She attended Haverhill schools and graduated from Haverhill Academy. After graduation, she worked at Glencliff Sanatorium, then as a nurse's aide in Woodsville before going to Bradford, VT to work as a waitress in the Chimes Restaurant. The children who attended Haverhill Academy remember Ella's meals. She was manager of the Haverhill School Lunch Program for nine years before going to Mary Hitchcock. She was employed at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital from 1967 until her retirement in 1984.
Ella lived a very active life. She joined the Mary A. Glidden Rebekah Lodge #45 where she became Noble Grande. She also joined the Rebekah Assembly. She was the Inside Guardian, Outside Guardian, and Chaplain, along with serving on many committees. Ella received the Declaration of Chivalry in 2000. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church of Haverhill, UCC where she served as a deconate and on various committees. She belonged to the Moosilauke Grange #214, the Pomona Grange, the NH State Grange, and the Haverhill Garden Club.
Ella volunteered at the Haverhill Police Department when it was located in Woodsville. She also volunteered in Linda Smith's kindergarten class at the Woodsville Elementary School, as-well-as at the Grafton County Complex, and the Glencliff Home for the Elderly. She cooked senior meals in both Haverhill and Orford.
In her spare time, she made baby and youth quilts along with mittens and hats for the senior programs. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, doing crafts at the Senior Center, and gardening.
She married Fred Richard Lang in 1945 and he predeceased her on November 7, 2003. She was also predeceased by her daughter, Elaine Hope Lang on October 18, 2007; her son, Ronald L. Lang on August 27, 2010; two sisters, Edith Demetrules and Helen Smith Lambert; and four brothers, Frank, Arthur "Stub," Douglas "Bum," and Maurice "Lucky" Bigelow.
She is survived by a son, Richard L. Lang and wife Patricia of West Lebanon, NH; four grandchildren, Mark Lang and Jodie, Mathew Lang and Sherleen, Justin Lang, and Alicia Lang and Stanley Bill; six great grandchildren, Jason Lang and Angela, Derek Lang and Jody, Dakota Day and Rachel, Mercedes Lang, Cassidie Lang, and Carson Bill; three great great grandchildren, Amiyah Lofty, Bently Lang, and Boston Lang; a sister, Shirley Nicol and husband Berk of Piermont, NH; two sisters-in-law, Alice Bigelow and Janice Bigelow, both of North Haverhill; and many nieces and nephews. Ella loved her family and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.
There will be a calling time on Wednesday, April 4th from 12:30-2 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. The funeral service will follow immediately at 2 PM at the funeral home, with Rev. George Hemway, Chaplain of the Grafton County Nursing Home officiating.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Center Haverhill Cemetery.
