Obituary

Woodsville, NH – Eric "Bud" Batchelder, 92, of Woodsville, passed away at Grafton County Nursing Home on Saturday, January 20, 2024.

Eric was born on December 11, 1931, in Woodsville, NH, to George "Ted" Batchelder and Vivian (Prescott) Batchelder.

After he graduated from high school, Eric joined the Army, serving in the Korean War from 12/14/1949 to 12/15/1952, then being Honorably discharged with a Purple Heart.

After leaving the service he met his bride of 66 years Judith (Battin) Batchelder. After they married, they settled back in Woodsville where they raised their three boys, Cliff, Gary, and Jim.

Eric worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad as a switcher, brakeman, and conductor, traveling all over New England; he retired from the Railroad in 1988.

Eric was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. He also enjoyed his time at the Ammonoosuc Valley Fish and Game Club, particularly trap shooting. He always had a good time in Vergennes with his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, taking advantage of being on the water of Lake Champlain.

He is survived by: his loving wife Judith; three sons, Clifford and wife Donna Achilles Batchelder of Haverhill, NH, Gary Batchelder of Rutherfordton, NC, and James Batchelder and husband Charles Spence on Haiku, HI; four grandchildren, Erica Abbey (Jon), Kyle Batchelder (Stacy Eastman-Batchelder), Kaysie Smith (Stephen), and Jaymie Batchelder (Sean Walzer); four great-grandchildren, Devon, Sarah, Emily Abbey, and Clara Smith; and one great great grandchild, Grace Vivian Abbey. He is also survived by a sister Lynn Whitcomb and her son Jason, and a sister-in-law, Virginia Ferris, and her sons Martin and Bruce.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Vivian Batchelder, and a brother-in-law Ted Ferris.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services, per his wishes. In the spring there will be a graveside service at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Woodsville on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 1 PM.
