North Haverhill, NH- Evelyn Cynthia Bigelow passed away peacefully at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the age of 94. Evelyn was born on October 28, 1920 in Websterville, VT to Ernest and Helen (Sykes) Cross, and later became the stepdaughter of Harry Chapman. She graduated from Haverhill Academy in 1938, from Brightlook Hospital in 1942 with a Nursing degree, and New England College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. Evelyn began her nursing career as a floor supervisor at Brightlook Hospital in St. Johnsbury, VT. She then became a part-time nurse at the original Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, NH and later was employed at the Sanatorium in Glencliff, NH where she specialized as an operating room nurse. In 1952, she began her extensive career at the Grafton County Hospital, which became the Grafton County Nursing Home in 1961. Evelyn was the Director of Nursing at this facility from 1955 until her retirement in 1991. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Stub Bigelow, whom she married in 1943; a brother, Frank Cross of Houston, TX; and a sister, Greta Morris of Haverhill, NH. She is survived by her daughter, Judith White and husband, Jack of Leesburg, FL; her son, Donald Bigelow and wife, Susan of North Haverhill and Fort Myers, FL; her grandchildren, Carrie Daughtery and husband, Edward of Mount Dora, FL, Todd Bigelow and wife, Jhoey of Middletown, NJ, Ryan Bigelow and friend, Victoria of Piscataway, NJ; her four great grandchildren, Anthony Tony, Amanda, Kylie and Cohen, who were so very precious to her and brought great joy to her life. She is also survived by her six step grandchildren, Charles Morrison Taylor III of Fort Myers, Canaan Johnson of Fort Myers, Lea Chloe Kanner and husband Matthew of Rye, NH, Zion Walter Johnson of Fort Myers, Luke Tabor Johnson and wife Monica of Fort Myers, and Dorothy Alexandra Fish and husband Joseph of New York City; eight step great grandchildren, Porsche, Levi and Zavior Taylor, Alexander and Elli Johnson, Mirabel Kanner, and Tabor and Theo Johnson; her sister, Nancy Hood and husband, Bill of Newbury, VT; her sisters-in-law, Edith Demetrules, Ella Lang, Janice Bigelow and Alice Bigelow, all of North Haverhill, Sidonia Cross of Houston, TX, and Shirley Nicol and husband, Berk of Warren, NH; as-well-as many dear nieces, nephews and friends. At Evelyn s request, there will be no calling hours. A tribute to Evelyn s life will be held on Saturday, November 22 at 1 PM at Ricker Funeral Home 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH, with Rev. George Hemway officiating. Burial will follow at the Center Haverhill Cemetery, Benton Road, North Haverhill.
