Swiftwater, NH Evelyn Anne (Irwin) Smith, 75, of Bunga Road, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, March 30, 2010, surrounded by her family. She was born in Woodsville, NH, January 16, 1935, the daughter of Charles A. and Hazel (Dunkley) Irwin. She grew up in North Haverhill and graduated from Haverhill Academy in 1953. She was united in marriage to Reginald B. Smith on February 27, 1953. They spent the next fifteen years serving in the military in various parts of the world, finally settling in the Haverhill/Bath area in 1968. Evelyn spent over 25 years working in the Grafton County Commissioner s office, retiring as Executive Director in 1997. Outside of family, work was her passion. She had a strong work ethic and was extremely dedicated to the responsibilities of any position she assumed. During her retirement, she enjoyed wintering in Florida with her husband. She had a special love for the Thresholds and Decisions program in Grafton County that she helped start and worked with for several years. She loved the opportunity to help others. Evelyn was very active with the Ross Wood Post # 20 American Legion Auxiliary in Woodsville where she and her husband spent many hours helping with the annual turkey dinner, Bingo nights, parades and any other occasion where they were needed. She was a member of North Haverhill United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for several years. When her children were young, she was active in the Bob-O-Link 4H Club, especially the sewing group. Evelyn always loved people and will be missed by many. She will be remembered as a caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, an infant son Gary Reginald, and a baby daughter. Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Reginald B. Smith of Swiftwater; sons Cecil W. Smith and wife Suzette of North Haverhill, NH and Joseph M. Smith and wife Heidi of Charlestown, NH; daughters Carol L. Aaron and husband David of Florida, and Regina S. Weeks of New York; seven grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Lillian Brooks and her husband Frank Toot Brooks of Lisbon, NH and Doris Hayton (and late husband James) of Illinois; and a brother, Charles A. Irwin and wife Benny of Bath, and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Thursday, April 1, from 5 to 7 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A funeral service will be Friday, April 2, at 1 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, with Reverend Heidi Smith officiating. Burial will be in the spring, at the Center Haverhill Cemetery, Center Haverhill, NH.
