Mountain Lakes, NH – George Hadgigeorge of 349 White Mountain Rd died on March 15 th at his home surrounded by his family after his lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease.
George was born on July 13 th , 1935 in Tsaritsani, Greece to Yianni and Efthalia Hadgigeorge. George lived in Laryssa, Greece during his childhood years with his parents, his brother Steve, and sisters Bessy and Evelyn. When he was a teenager he moved with his family to the U.S, and they settled in Manchester, NH.
George attended Norwich University Military College as a cadet and excelled in Mathematics. He was also a stellar performer on the soccer field for the Norwich Cadets. He graduated from Norwich in 1960 and fulfilled his military obligation as a unit tank commander at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
After his honorable discharge from the Army, George was hired at the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, D.C. Shortly after being hired, George married Anna Gravanis from Haverhill, MA, originally from Tsaritsani, Greece.
A few years later, George took a job as a geodesist at the Air Force Geophysics Laboratory at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford, MA. He and Anna moved to Lowell, MA and started their family.
Shortly thereafter, they moved to Tewksbury, MA where they raised their 2 daughters, Thalia and Mary, and lived there until George retired from civil service at the young age of 50.
As a geodesist, George was published countless times for his work in utilizing satellite altimeter measurements in geodesy and gravity field determination.
In June of 1982, George won the prestigious Research and Development Special Award from the Defense Mapping Agency in Washington, D.C. for his work in utilizing various mathematical techniques to determine the global geoid and earth's gravity field.
His achievements in geoidal and gravity field determination were ultimately utilized in guidance systems to enhance missile accuracy for the U.S. Air Force.
Upon retirement, George and Anna settled in their vacation home in Mountain Lakes, NH and sold their home in Tewksbury, MA. Subsequently, George and Anna purchased an oceanfront, 7 th floor condo in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. They dubbed their condo Thalassa (meaning Sea in Greek).
They had the best of both worlds for many years as they spent the colder months at Thalassa and would head back to the Greek's Nest in Mountain Lakes after mud season to enjoy the spring, summer, and fall.
George was always happiest around his family and would relish family visits to either of his homes. Every July 4 th George would cook a lamb on his custom spit for the family celebration in Mountain Lakes. He loved cooking on his grill for his family and friends and was known to sip an Ouzo or two, especially during family celebrations.
George was a lover of Greek music and was known to blare it from his speakers sitting outside on his dock in NH.
He was a talented Greek dancer and would display his rare talents at weddings, home, or work Christmas parties. He may have even been found dancing on a table or two, should the spirit move him!
Wherever he was, at work or in his personal life, George had a magnetic personality. People just wanted to be near him, as he was a unique soul with a generous heart that matched his love of life. George was the epitome of class, style, and confidence. Maria, his granddaughter, referred to him as the magic in our family .
George was a man's man who was appreciated and respected by men and women alike. George had dashing good looks and when anyone complimented him on his hair or appearance he'd simply respond by saying " I know. "
George (also known as Papou to his grandchildren) will be lovingly missed by his wife Anna, daughter and son-in-law Thalia and Bob Bessette of Mountain Lakes, daughter Mary Houde of Mountain Lakes, his granddaughters and their partners, Lianna Bessette and Scott Stelter of Arlington, MA, Maria Bessette and Jesse Tarnas of Providence, RI, and grandson Antonio Houde of Mountain Lakes.
He is predeceased by his brother Steve of Palm Beach, FL and sister Bessy Romaides of Manchester, NH and Volos, Greece.
He is survived by his sister Evelyn and husband Tash Dovas of Hampton, NH, Claire and Nestor Tzouros of Needham, MA, Nick and Esther Gravanis of Easton, CT, Eva Gravanis of Toronto, Canada, Eleni Hadgigeorge of Palm Beach, FL and countless nieces and nephews.
