Harold J Haskins, 94, North Haverhill, NH, died peacefully in his home after a period of failing health on Tuesday February 15, 2022. He was born in Beverly, MA on September 24, 1927 to Harold and Matilda L. (Sanphy) Haskins.
Harold graduated from Beverly High School in 1946. He earned a BS in Social Science from Boston College in 1952 and was commissioned as a 2 nd Lieutenant in the USMC Reserve the same year. He earned his Masters of Education Administration from State College, Salem, MA, in 1959 after doing graduate work at Boston College and Boston University. He attended the Harvard Graduate School of Education from 1968 to 1969 focusing on Administration and Supervision. His military career consisted of flight school in 1953 and 1954 before being called to active duty as a USMC fighter pilot. He retired from the Marine Corps as a Captain on July 10, 1956.
Harold married Ann Donovan on June 25, 1960 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Winthrop, MA. Together they raised four children.
Harold worked at the Ward 2 Veteran's Memorial School and the Babson School in Gloucester, MA, Manchester Jr. Sr. High in Manchester, MA, and Goodyear School, in Woburn, MA. In 1966 he was hired as the supervising principal at the Lincoln Woodstock Elementary School and in 1970 he went to work as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools for SAU #23 until his retirement in 1989. He continued to work as a student teacher supervisor for Norwich University for several years into his retirement.
Harold enjoyed flying his Cessna well into his 80's and playing golf into his 90's. He also enjoyed spending time with his neighbors Dean and Donna Clark and their family with whom he enjoyed many holidays and special occasions. He was active with the Dean Memorial Airport and participated in the balloon and airplane ride raffle fund raisers. He loved watching Jeopardy, and never lost his ability to ask the right questions. He volunteered at Court Street Arts at Alumni Hall for several years. Harold spent many winters in North Myrtle Beach, enjoying the southern weather and the famous golf courses.
He is predeceased by his parents, his wife Ann Haskins (2006), and two sisters Mary Genevive Hadley (1995) and Geraldine M. Abbott (2016). He is survived by two sons, Timothy R. Haskins, Groveton, NH, and Mark J. Haskins and his wife Joy of Springfield, VA, two daughters, Kathleen M. Haskins of New Haven, CT, and Suzanne Scheib and her husband John of Painted Post, NY. Four grandchildren, Sean Haskins and his wife Amanda of North Billerica, MA, Evan Haskins and his wife Maria, of Pelham, NH, Flynn Scheib and his wife Amanda of Rochester, NY, and Kacey Scheib of Corning, NY, a great-granddaughter, Madelyn, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
There will be a graveside service at the Center Haverhill Cemetery on Saturday May 7, 2022 at 1PM with Melissa Gould as Celebrant. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make donations in memory of Harold Haskins to North Country Home Health and Hospice, 600 Cottage St. Littleton , NH 03561 or the Woodsville Ambulance Service, PO Box 191, Woodsville, NH 03785. Each of these organizations was instrumental in allowing Harold to spend his final days in the home he loved.
