Obituary

Piermont, NH Irma Alice Tullar Waterman, 87, died in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Jan. 15th, 2014, in the Hospice Room at Woodsville Cottage Hospital with her family gathered around her. Irma was born in Corinth, VT, Oct. 16th, 1926 to Charles and Alice (Hastings) Tullar. They moved soon after that to West Fairlee, where she grew up. She attended grade school in West Fairlee, and then Thetford Academy, where she met Richard Dick Waterman, to whom she was married in 1950 and who died in 2009. She attended Bennington Beauty School and worked as a beautician for a few years, until the time when she began to devote herself to making a home with Dick and starting a family. She continued to enjoy cutting hair for family and friends, and trading perms with her friend, Stella Jesseman, or her sister Cecile. Family was used to periodically holding their noses and dashing through the kitchen. Once the youngest of her kids was pretty well through grade school, she went to work at Gould s Country Store (the original one in Piermont Village). She was a natural at customer service, as we now call it, and truly enjoyed working for Russ and serving Piermont folks for nine years. Following her work at the store, she took a position at Piermont Village School as a cook, at first with her friend Stella, and eventually with a younger generation of cooks that included at least two women who became dear friends for the rest of her life -- Julie Simpson Lamarre and Terry Hogan. Julie recounts for us that Irma s older-generation style was kind of structured , compared to her own, but (thanks to good humor on both sides) they laughed a lot and had good time. Irma was an equal participant in buying and building the family camp on Lake Armington, and before they afforded a chainsaw, with Dick on one end, she manned the other end of a cross-cut saw to carve out a driveway from the trees. She enjoyed the camp through her last summer. In her day, she liked to dance with Dick, and they went square-dancing and participated in many community activities, including those with the Piermont Congregational Church and North Thetford Federated Church. She was a good and enthusiastic cook, seamstress, and could cane chairs and refinish furniture. The house was always adorned with old family pieces that she had lovingly refurbished. Irma is predeceased by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and four of their spouses: Catherine T. and Merrill Chandler, Rendall and Kay Brooks Tullar and Katherine Bryant Tullar, Cecile T. and Franklyn Linton, Sr., and Bernard Tullar, Sr. She is survived by her brother George Tullar, Sr., and his wife Barbara A. , by her sister-in-law Frances Saladino Tullar, and by three children: Alan and wife Maudine Van Norden Waterman of Thetford, Michael and companion Nancy Cutting of Corinth, and Holly of Corinth; two grandchildren and spouses: Keith and Emily Williams Waterman of Thetford and Jessica W. and David Adams of Claremont; and by 5 beautiful great-grandchildren: Kate and Elizabeth Waterman, and Kaliegh, Sean, and Trevor Adams. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren, whom she loved dearly, each and every one, although keeping the little ones all straight, in recent years, was difficult for her. The photos were appreciated and are still on her refrigerator. Along with some prompting, these really helped her recall who belonged to whom. A service in her honor will be held Friday, January 24th at 2 p.m. at the North Thetford Federated Church in No. Thetford, VT. Some flowers will certainly be welcome, at this wintry time of year, but if you prefer, donations may be made in her memory to any of the following: Piermont Historical Society, Piermont Fast Squad, Piermont Library, or the North Thetford Federated Church.
