Obituary

Wells River, VT Jean Hooker Lanphere Hollar was born at home in the Village of Wells River on May 30, 1924, the daughter of Adelaide Hooker Lanphere and Charles Henry Lanphere. She died on Tuesday, December 2, 2014, after a period of failing health at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH surrounded by her family. Jean s education began at Wells River High School, graduating in 1942. She attended Tufts in Boston and received a Bachelor s Degree in History from the University of Vermont in 1945. She later received a Master s Degree in Education from Keene State College. Jean was an avid reader and lifelong learner and educator. Her teaching career began at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax, VT., and continued at St. Johnsbury Academy where her mother had taught previously. Her career continued with additional teaching positions at Gorham High School, Gorham, ME, and Thomaston High School in Thomaston, CT. She returned to Vermont and taught elementary school in Townshend, VT, and finishing her career with 20 years in Westminister, VT. She was also employed by the Vermont Department of Child Welfare, supervising Foster children and working with Foster families in Southern, VT. She met her husband, John Hollar of Bellows Falls, while working in Southern VT. The two were married in St. Luke s Episcopal Church, Woodsville, NH in 1956. Mr. & Mrs. John Hollar took their honeymoon to Quebec City, they settled in Bellows Falls. In 1958 twin sons, John Hooker Hollar and James Andrew Hollar were born to the couple. Jean had a lifelong interest in travel and visiting other countries beginning with a tour of Europe while teaching at St. Johnsbury Academy. This was followed by an automobile tour of the southern states continuing to California and Oregon eventually returning across the country s northern tier. While teaching in Westminister Jean s classroom formed a friendship with a Russian School in Volgagrad. After some correspondence with the Russian teachers and exchanged between the two classrooms, Jean was fortunate to make the trip of a lifetime to visit the Russian classroom the highlight of her teaching career. Throughout her life Jean maintained her mother s home in Wells River while helping to raise her family in Bellows Falls. Many summers were also spent at her family s camp on Halls Lake in West Newbury, VT. The order of each day was swimming followed by more swimming. A cancer survivor, Jean insisted that in order to expedite her rehabilitation she insisted that her boys replace a portion of the family garden with a swimming pool. The result was an unforgettable and irreplaceable family victory. Jean attended the United Church of Bellows Falls and was a lifelong member of the Wells River Congregational Church. She was also a fifty year member of Alpha Chapter 53 Order of the Eastern Star and the Bellows Falls Women s Club. She was an active member of the Windham Northeast Education Association. Upon retiring from teaching she continued tutoring students, served as Secretary at the United Church of Bellows Falls and as substitute Librarian in Walpole, NH. Jean had a lifelong interest in music and art. Upon retirement she joined and art class and enjoyed painting for many years sharing her works with family and friends. She continued to enjoy life spending time in Bellows Falls and Wells River with her sons and grandchildren. Her survivors include her sons, Johnny Hollar of Walpole, NH and Jimmy Hollar of Marlow, NH. Four grandchildren, Michael Hollar, Amy Hollar, Rachel Hollar, and Andrew Hollar. Also five close cousins, Jacqueline Swartz, Judith H. Safford, and John Parker Hooker IV, John Perry Hooker and Jackie Cass. She also leaves many dear friends, Irene Johnson, Marion Siebert, Marilyn and Bob Wheeler, Barbara Comtois, Ila Mitchell, as well as many others. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be on Saturday, December 13, at 11 AM at the Wells River Congregational Church, UCC with Rev. Kathryn J. Maver officiating. Burial will be in the Wells River Cemetery in the spring.
