Jeanne Scott Foltan
Bath, NH
After a long and merry life, Jeanne Scott Foltan, nee Jean Hartranft Scott, daughter of James Scott and Elsie Hartranft, died on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at her beloved stonehouse in Bath, from complications of diabetes. Born in 1940 in Ridgefield Park, NJ, she grew up in Bogota and Hillsdale, NJ, a member of the first graduating class of Pascack Valley Regional High School, Hillsdale, in 1958. Following a year at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, she began her undergraduate studies at Moravian College, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Her lifelong wish was to become a teacher. She earned two degrees: in Elementary Education and English, and in January, 1963, was licensed in Pennsylvania and NJ, accepting a position as the Kindergarten teacher at Parkdale School, Paramus, NJ.
Her love of the piano and organ began at 15, when she was the organist at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hillsdale, NJ. She pursued her avocation and her profession following her marriage in September, 1963, to Roy Stephen Foltan, of White Plains, NY. As their family grew, they moved to the Syracuse area, where she taught Kindergarten General Studies at the Hebrew Day School and earned graduate credits at the University.
Sons Robert Stephen, and Andrew Scott were educated in upstate New York, following their father's career as a Trust Officer for the Marine Midland Bank. During a move in 1974 to East Aurora, NY, Jeanne taught Music and Language Arts at Immaculate Conception Catholic School, and served as Children's Choir Director at the United Methodist Church where they were members. Following the blizzard of 1977 the family returned to the Albany area, and joined the Latham United Methodist Church where she was elected President of the Troy Conference United Methodist Women (UMW), serving as a certified Lay Minister and organist in eastern NY and southern Vermont. She was the first woman to speak from the pulpit at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Albany, where she served as Secretary to the Vicar, Chaplain of the NY State Legislature.
After teaching Language Arts and Music at St. Jude's Catholic School in Troy, NY, the family moved to East Dorset, Vermont, following Mr. Foltan's appointment as Trust Officer for Factory Point National Bank in Manchester Center. Now licensed in Vermont, Jeanne taught Jr. High Language Arts in the Dorset School in 1985, moving to Fisher Elementary School in Arlington, Vt, to accept a position as a fourth grade teacher in 1986. During her tenure there, she served on Governor Kunin's Education Advisory Board, joined the University of Vermont's teacher exchange program to Beijing Normal University, China, and traveled to various universities as a member of the National and New England Associations of Schools (NEASC) and Colleges teams, evaluating and granting accreditation to teacher education programs including George Washington University, and universities in Alabama and Maine.
She wrote curriculum for elementary students for NASA, moving to Arlington High School to teach English in 1994, became a member of the Vermont State Standards task force working at the University of Vermont to establish new guidelines for secondary students. Her interest in Scottish History and Literature prompted her establishment of the Arlington High School Scottish Writers' Club, which involved several trips to Scotland for her students. The Foltans enjoyed the annual St. Andrew's Society traditional Highland Games in Quechee and Burlington during their time in Vermont. No memorial service is planned following cremation, but a moment of remembrance, courtesy of Fr. William A. Watts, Vicar, and Iain McHarg, Piper, will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Woodsville, NH, on Sunday, September 24th, at 10:30 am. Memorial donations may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodsville, NH., and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, whose Doctors and Nurses and Staff made Jeanne's quality of life so incredibly satisfactory and fulfilling over the years
