Joan
Haskell
September 20, 2023
Randolph, VT – Joan C. (Andreoli) Haskell, 90, of Randolph, VT, formerly of Groton, VT, went home into the arms of the Lord, and with loving family by her side on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
Joan was born in Long Beach, NY, on May 5, 1933, the youngest child of Mary C. (O'Hare) and Henry P. Andreoli. She graduated from Long Beach High School in 1951 and went on to Browns Business School.
Her first of many adventures to come, was a trip to France in March of 1955 where she joined her husband Carroll Palmer where he was stationed during the Korean War. She traveled by boat for five days before she was reunited with Carroll, and they made their first home in Nancy, France. Upon returning to the states, they lived in Long Island, NY, where they grew their family, first came Chip, and second came Debbie. After some time, they moved to Groton, VT, which was Carroll childhood home, but from then on became Joan's hometown. They lived on Groton Pond for a while before purchasing Palmer's Red Barn, now known as the Upper Valley Grill. Joan loved meeting and talking with all the people who stopped the Red Barn.
As all things in life change, Joan moved on from the Red Barn after running it for 10 years and began working at the Wells River Savings Bank; where she worked for 27 years, before retiring in 2007. It was a great transition for her because she was still able to chit chat with folks coming in to do their banking. She also found love again and was married to Kent Haskell on October 4, 1981.
Joan loved living in Groton and was quite active in town events. She enjoyed being on the Community Club and helped with the Annual Chicken Pie Supper on Fall Foliage Day in Groton, and rarely missed making chicken pies and serving the meal along with other community members. She was the treasurer of the Groton Historical Society for many years and served 5 years on the Blue Mountain Union school board.
She and Kent loved adventuring together. Most notably were their snow machine trips, they loved taking rides to the hills for wintertime cookouts, especially out on the snow machine roads to Derby, VT. They were members of the Buck-a-Roo's of Groton, but also had a smaller group, known as the Pig-A-Roo's. It was with this group that Joan and Kent took a very memorable trip to Montana, where they rode snowmachines through Yellow Stone Park. Joan and Kent also traveled to Alaska, Jerusalem, Hawaii and Italy, so many wonderful adventures.
Not only was Joan an adventurer, but she was creative as well. She played the violin in high school, she was an accomplished piano player, and she played the accordion. Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were gifted with knitted items, Christmas stockings, blankets, and sweaters. She also made beautiful quilts.
She was also a woman of faith. She was a member of the Groton United Methodist Church, and it was her faith that gave her strength and comfort.
Joan has been predeceased by her husband Kent H. Haskell and Carroll R. Palmer; her parents Henry and May Andreoli; her two sisters, Virginia Carey and Helen Tarantino; and her two brothers, Henry (Bud) A. and John (Andy) J. Andreoli.
She is survived by her two children, Kenneth (Chip) Palmer and wife Diane, and Deborah (Debbie) Chamberlin and husband Richard; her stepdaughter, Elizabeth (Beth) Haskell; six grandchildren, Brice, Alissa, Cassie, Brittany, Amber and Cameron; two step-grandsons, Zeb and Zac; eighteen great grandchildren; and several wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins.
A big thank you to Hayley and Gracia from VNH Hospice, who made Joan's transition a gentle one.
A grave side service will be held at the Groton Village Cemetery on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 1PM with Pastor Candace Ricker officiating, with a reception to follow at the Groton United Methodist Church.
