Obituary

John M. Calef died at home in Landaff NH on January 25, 2022 with his wife Shirley by his side.  He battled declining health for many years.

John was born on June 24, 1935 to Leon C. Calef and Ruth A  Morrell in Barrington NH where he was raised and met his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley Ann McKenna whom he bought a candy bar for on the steps of his Grandmother's store at the young age of 14.  A touching love story, the two married and remained together and deeply in love for the remainder of John's life.

John dedicated his life to the happiness and welfare of his wife and three children which he so deeply cherished and loved.  He was a tremendous family man and husband and will be remembered for that more than any of his personal or business achievements.

John attended Gould Academy in Bethel Maine where along with his studies he was both an athlete and musician.  He broke school records in the weight room while at Gould Academy but he was more dedicated to the Alto Saxophone which he continued to play at his home until recently. His notes on the Alto were beautiful but he never pursued music professionally.

After Gould Academy, John continued his studies at the University of New Hampshire where he earned his Degree in Poultry Science.  He spent many years in various businesses related to the Poultry Industry but after a severe back injury John ultimately settled on Real Estate investment.

John had deep love for the USA and particularly for the State of New Hampshire which he considered to be the most beautiful place on earth.  He once sat on the forehead of the Old Man on the Mountain as a young Man and later he lived on Meredith Bay on Lake Winnipesaukee along with his wife Shirley for many years.   He also loved the Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots and Celtics, though the University of New Hampshire hockey team would be at the top of his list.

John is survived by his wife Shirley Calef, sister Patricia Cope of Alexandria VA, son Alan Calef of Rochester NH, daughter Diane Schaffer McDonald of Fort Lauderdale FL and son Bradley Calef of Woodsville NH, Grandchildren Kristy Wozniak of Newtown PA and Julianne Calef of Portsmouth NH and Great Grandson Gregory Wozniak.

The family will not be having a memorial service but friends are encouraged to donate time or money to the Lisbon Lions Club.
