Obituary

Swiftwater, NH John Edwin Paye, 73 of Wild Ammonoosuc Road, died Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at his home following a period of failing health. He was born in Jericho, VT, October 6, 1940, a son of David Harold and Mary Margaret (Benoit) Paye and graduated from Newbury High School, Class of 1959. He served for a brief time with the Vermont National Guard. John later married Judith Nelson on May 4, 1963. For 31 years, John worked as a lineman and later as foreman for Green Mountain Power from their Wells River Office, retiring in 1999. Along with his wife Judy, they owned and operated the Birchwood Motor Inn in Wells River for 11 years, selling it in 2006. John was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a life member of the North American Hunting Club. He and Judy have wintered in Florida from late fall to early May for the past 12 years. While in Florida, he enjoyed using his pontoon boat, taking family and friends out fishing. Survivors include his wife of 50 years Judy M. Paye of Swiftwater; a daughter, Daneen Paye of Rumney, NH; a son, David Paye and wife Beth of East Ryegate; his mother, Mary Paye Fortier of Woodsville; six grandchildren, Joseph Paye, Katelyn and Haley Craig, and their father Brian Craig of East Ryegate, Kayla and Cody Bilodeau, Lacey Paye and her friend Cory Pike and a great grandson Cayden Pike; four brothers, Richard E. Paye of Denver, CO, Wilfred P. Paye of South Ryegate, VT, Delmar J. Paye of Claremont, NH, and Wayne D. Paye of Newbury; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a granddaughter Jasmine Lilyanne Marie Paye on July 20, 2013, and a brother Rodney D. Paye on April 13, 2006. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the West Newbury Cemetery.
