Obituary

Center Haverhill, NH -- John Howard Poor, 67, County Road, died on Friday, April 30, 2010 at his home. He was born in Bath, NH, September 10, 1942, the son of Harry C. and Shirley (Lyndes) Poor. John married Harriet Clark on January 26, 1963. When he was younger he had worked for Hood s Plumbing and Heating of North Haverhill, and later worked as an auto mechanic at numerous garages in Hanover, Thetford, and Fairlee. John also worked at Walker Motors Sales in Woodsville for many years, retiring in December of 2009. He enjoyed auto racing, especially dirt track racing. In the mid 1970 s he raced at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT. Throughout the years, John worked in many different areas around Bear Ridge, most recently as assistant flagman. He traveled around the Northeast with C.V. Elms and his # 6 modified dirt car as his chief mechanic and builder. Along with his daughter, Debbie, he had a passion for horses and showed them at area equine events. He served as a volunteer for North Country Home Health and Hospice, and also served in the National Guard and was discharged in 1968. At home, he enjoyed watching and feeding the variety of birds that frequented his feeders and birdbaths. John will be remembered for his quiet demeanor, big heart, and his desire to help whenever possible. He was predeceased by his wife of 42 years, Harriet Poor on January 25, 2005; his parents, Harry C. and Shirley Poor; and a sister, Marie Poor. Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Sandvil of Center Haverhill; a sister, Patricia Hatch of Groton, VT; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Wednesday, May 5, 2010, from 6 to 8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A memorial service will be on Thursday, May 6, at 1 PM at Ricker Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Center Haverhill Cemetery in Center Haverhill. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Country Home Health and Hospice Agency, 536 Cottage Street, Littleton, NH 03561.
