Obituary

South Ryegate, VT Joyce (Lackie) Frost, 84, of Frost Road, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, while wintering in Dade City, FL. She passed gracefully, cradled by love, in to the arms of her Lord and Savior. The dignity of her departure matched the dignity of the life she led. She was born in St. Johnsbury, VT, April 24, 1930, a daughter of Harry A. and Harriet (Cassidy) Lackie, Sr. The family lived in Peacham, VT before moving to Haverhill and then to Bath, NH in the early 1940 s. Joyce graduated from Woodsville High School, Class of 1948, where she was a student athlete, having played basketball. Later, she graduated from Laconia Business School. During her student days, she met the love of her life, Calvin R. Frost, and they were married on November 23, 1949, and have lived in South Ryegate ever since. For several years, she was the bookkeeper for Walker Motor Sales in Woodsville. Joyce rode with Calvin in the truck when delivering granite, did the bookkeeping for his business, and even drove the tractor trailer truck. As a child, she attended the Barnet Center Presbyterian Church and became a member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church in 1950. There, she served as a trustee, was treasurer for several years, and was ordained an elder on January 24, 1982, served several terms and was also the Clerk of Session. She attended the Presbytery of Northern New England meetings and served on the committee. As a member of the Presbyterian Women, over the years she worked to support missions, chaired many fund raisers such as the annual chicken pie supper, held offices, and co-founded in 1984 the South Ryegate Senior Meal Program. Joyce served as manager, menu planner, and co-managed with a dedicated group of volunteers the successful meal program. Known as a hands-on-person, and a guiding voice, she received Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Women in 1995. Joyce also served as a Trustee and Clerk of the Board of Cottage Hospital in Woodsville. Since 1997, she and Calvin have wintered in the Dade City, FL area where they made many friends, played cards in the evenings, and shuffle board during the day. Joyce excelled at these events and won many tournaments in the park. One year they shared the Citizen of the Year award. Joyce loved her home and got much enjoyment from tending her flower beds. In her spare time, she loved doing crafts. Over the years, she knitted hundreds of hats for the BMU second grade students. Joyce was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted sister. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and attending her granddaughters soccer and track events all over Vermont. The world has been immeasurably improved by having her in it. Few people gave as much support and love to those around her as Joyce did. Few people laughed and enjoyed life as much as she. Joyce was an inspiration to countless people, and her joy and compassion endeared her to everyone. Joyce was predeceased by a son, Robert William Frost who died on February 18, 1953; three sisters, Arlene Swett, Shirley Cate, and Eva Pearl; and four brothers, Francis, James, Harry Jr., and Leslie Lackie. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Calvin R. Frost of South Ryegate; (mailing address: PO Box 59, South Ryegate, VT 05069); a daughter, Alison J.
