Obituary

Newbury, VT Kendell Edgar Welch, 80, a former longtime resident, died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH. He was born at the homestead farm in South Ryegate, VT, June 23, 1929, a son of Dick and Flossie (Rhodes) Welch. He was stationed in Germany while serving with the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Kendell was a self employed dairy farmer with his brother Wilbur on the homestead farm in South Ryegate. Kendell married Shirley Barnes on May 14, 1955. A few years later they purchased their own dairy farm in Newbury, where he farmed for many years. When Kendell stopped farming, he went to work for Piper Construction in Bradford, VT in the home construction business and at the P & H Truck Stop in Newbury. He was a member and deacon of the First Congregational Church of Newbury and Ross Wood Post # 20 American Legion of Woodsville. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Shirley Welch on March 10, 2003; a son, Erwin Ira Welch on September 15, 1981; a sister, Alta Rush; and three brothers, Wilbur Welch, and twins, Vernon and Virgil Welch. Surviving family members include two daughters, Winifred Patten of Pike, NH, and Alice Welch and partner, Thomas Glass of Castleton, VT; two sons, Kendell E. Welch, II of Newbury, VT and Martin B. Welch of Woodsville, NH; eleven grandchildren and several great grandchildren; a sister, Linnie Rush of Montgomery, NY; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, March 23rd, from 6:30 to 8:00 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, March 24th, at 1 PM at the funeral home with Rev. Edward Jager, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Newbury, officiating. Spring burial will be in Groton Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grafton County Nursing Home, C/O Activity Fund, 3855 Dartmouth College Highway, North Haverhill, NH 03774.
