Obituary

Monroe, NH- Larkin H. Burrill, 91, formerly of Monroe, died on June 5, 2010, at the Monadnock Community Hospital in Peterborough, NH. Larkin was born in Monroe on November 22, 1918, to Howard Winfield and Jean (Hosford) Burrill. Upon graduation from McIndoes Academy, he entered Roosevelt Aviation School at Roosevelt Field, Long Island, NY. Following his graduation in 1940, he worked as a mechanic for Northeast Airlines at Boston, Bangor and Presque Isle, ME. He also worked for American Export Airlines at LaGuardia Field, NY, where he crewed as a mechanic on their fleet of three Sikorski VS44 Flying Boats, providing the first transatlantic service to the rich and famous. He entered the US Army Air Corps on November 16, 1942 and served in the European Theater with the 93rd Fighter Control Squadron until his discharge as a Staff Sergeant on April 6, 1946. He remained in the Air Reserves with the 147th Composite Squadron until discharged on April 7, 1949. He married Amy Joan Wright on June 21, 1944 in Hempstead, NY. In August 1946, they returned to Monroe to work on his father s dairy farm and in 1951 they moved into his grandparent s home. Prior to his retirement he served as the Postmaster in Monroe for 37 years. He was a volunteer on the Monroe Fire Department. He served on the town Board of Selectmen. As a long-time member of the Monroe Mens Club, he helped institute the Connecticut Valley Basketball Tournament in the early 1950s. This popular local event continues to the present and funds the Mens Club College Scholarships. He also served many terms as a trustee of the Monroe Methodist Church. An avid downhill skier, during ski season he could often be found at Cannon Mt. enjoying his favorite pastime. In summer and fall he was a regular on the Lisbon Country Club golf course. He was predeceased by his wife Amy Joan on January 8, 2001; a daughter Beth Amy Arseneault in 1993. He is survived by a daughter, Jean Frechette and husband Dr. Richard Frechette of Peterborough; a son Thomas W. Burrill and wife Betty of Concord, NH; five granddaughters and three grandsons; and three great grandsons and one great granddaughter. There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be held at the Monroe Community Church, Woodsville Road, Monroe, NH, on Saturday, June 12th, at 10 AM with the Rev. Dr. Donald Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Monroe Village Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to the Monroe Mens Club or the Monroe Community Church.
