Obituary

White River, VT- Leeds Columbia Ackerman, 91, formerly of North Haverhill, died on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at the Brookside Nursing Home in White River. He was born in Fairlee, VT, on January 6, 1924, the son of Louis and Esther (Sanborn) Ackerman. Leeds served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II from February 24, 1943 to January 25, 1946. He participated in action in the Marshall Islands and on Iwo Jima. Following his military service he returned to Orford High School to receive his diploma with the Class of 1946. He married Marion Tyler on July 9, 1949. They lived in Haverhill for many years. Leeds was a grader operator for Perini Construction building Interstate 91 through Vermont. He later worked for Newman Lumber Corp. in Woodsville, retiring in 1986. Leeds was a member of the Haverhill VFW Post # 5245 and Ross-Wood American Legion Post #20 of Woodsville. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and golfing. During his retirement years he did extensive RV traveling around the United States. He will be remembered for his gentle ways and easy smile. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Ackerman; a son, Dean L. Ackerman on August 14, 1999; a daughter, Janet E. Ackerman on August 28, 2013; and by several sisters and brothers. Survivors include his daughter, Julie Ackerman Downing and husband John of Enfield, NH; two grandchildren, Josh and Dan Ackerman both of Newbury, VT; two brothers, Lloyd Ackerman of Fairlee, VT and Glen "Babe" Ackerman of Piermont, NH; his companion of 23 years, Bea Robinson of Wilder, VT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be no calling hours. A graveside memorial service will be on Monday, May 4, at 2 PM at the Fairlee Village Cemetery, Route 5, Fairlee, VT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
