Obituary

North Haverhill, NH Lillian Bell (Crawford) Wilkinson was born in Boston, Massachusetts on February 21, 1916, the oldest of eight children to her parents Stanley G. Crawford and Lillian B. Crawford. The family made their home in Weymouth, MA. On August 11, 1936 she and Edward Joseph Wilkinson were married in New York City. After a short stay in New York the couple moved to NJ and in 1943 purchased a home in Millington where they lived for the next 57 years. Edward and Lillian had a total of four children including: Christine Wilkinson Meserve and husband Robert of Lyman, NH, Lillian Wilkinson Smith of Blairstown, NJ, Edward J. Wilkinson, Jr. and wife Shirley of Fairfield Glade, TN and Stanley Wilkinson of Fort Meyers, FL. She is also survived by 10 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren; and two brothers, Allen Crawford and wife Joan of Bellingham, MA and Larry Crawford and wife Wilma of Murfreesboro, TN. She is predeceased by her husband Edward J. Wilkinson on March 31, 1998, other deceased family members include, David Crawford, Stanley Crawford, Beatrice Slocumb, Nancy Longest and Estella Curtis. In Millington the family lived close to the Passaic River. It was a great place for outdoor activities such as swimming in the summer and skating in the winter. Her husband Edward loved the outdoors and Lillian loved knitting, sewing and making crafts of all types. She also enjoyed picnicking and visiting auctions. Over the years she amassed quite a collection of carnival glass. The family belonged to the First Presbyterian Church of Stirling, New Jersey. Lillian was an active member, quickly becoming one of its Sunday school teachers. It must have been enjoyable, as the job lasted for some 35 years. When her sons were old enough for scouting Lillian found her true calling. In 1949 she became a den mother when the boys joined the cub scouts. She soon graduated to Den Leader Coach of pack 56 in Millington, a post she held for over 20 years. During that time she organized and ran sessions of den mother training, Pow Wow and Round table . She also worked on numerous committees and fund drives. In 1972 she received the coveted Silver Fawn Award . This award recognizes women for service to the local Council s Cub Scouting program and was equivalent to the Silver Beaver award for men. Eventually she joined the staff in the Boy Scout Office in Plainfield, NJ as an office assistant and worked in that capacity until she was almost 70. In her words If it was Scouting I did it . She is still a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America. After her husband Edward passed away in 1998 she lived alone in Millington for a short time. Then in failing health moved to Littleton, NH to live with her granddaughter, Lynn Davis. Further deterioration in her health necessitated another move to the Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, NH, where she died on June 4, 2008. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be on Aug. 8th, at 11 AM at the Shared Ministry,(white church), Main Street Lisbon, NH, with Rev. Lyn Winter officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Presbyterian Church, 158 Central Avenue, Stirling, NJ 07980, or to the Boy Scouts of America, Patriot s Path Council, 222 Columbia Turnpike, Florham Park, NJ 07932.
