Madeline E
Matte
December 15, 1924 – June 16, 2016
Danville , VT- Madeline Elizabeth Matte, 91, of Danville and more recently of St. Johnsbury, VT, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2016, surrounded by the love of her family.
She was born on December 15, 1924, in Charlotte, VT, one of 11 children to Ezra and Rose (Lavalette) Curtis.
At the 1812 Tavern in Charlotte, she met and later married, Omer Romeo Matte. He was the love of her life. For a time they made their home in Mallett's Bay, VT, before moving to St. Johnsbury and then to Danville, where she resided for 54 years.
Together, in their 44 wonderful years of marriage, they raised 9 children who blessed them with 14 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, and a great great grandson on the way.
Madeline will be most remembered for her delicious homecooking because it was always made with love, the endless gardens and canning she did, the pot holders she made and pillows she quilted, her love of flowers which she passed on, but mostly, for the love she gave to her family.
She loved the traditional family gatherings, anyone who stopped in for a visit, and riding the roads, always with a stop for an ice cream along the way!
After raising her family, she did daycare and later went to work for local families caring for their loved ones. She also volunteered at the Open Door in Danville.
Madeline was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Danville and was very proud that she and Omer helped to build the current church. She loved being a part of the chicken BBQs, making donuts for the Danville Fair, the potluck dinners, and all the great camping trips to Kettle Pond.
She was predeceased by her husband Omer in 1977; sons Phillip and infant Richard; daughter Janette Barrett; brothers John, Ezra Jr. "Ike," Frank, Albert, Raymond, Fred; and sisters Pauline and Isabell.
She is survived by her children, Cecile (Victor) Boivin, Joan (David) Field, Andrew (Donna) Matte, Theresa (David) Wilkins, David (Deb) Matte, George (Janet) Matte, Sharon (Paul) Cardin, and a son-in-law, Richard (Denise) Barrett. She is also survived by a dear brother and sister, Louis (Annie) Curtis and Shirley LaBerge, and a special sister-in-law, Sister Jane Frances Matte. She leaves many nieces, nephews, and a special friend, Terry (Byron) Fuller.
There will be no calling hours.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, June 20, at 11 AM at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 240 Route 2 East, Danville, VT, with Rev. Bernard Gaudreau, officiating. Burial will follow in the Danville Green Cemetery.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Corpus Christi Parish in memory of Madeline Matte, 49 Winter Street, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819 for the purpose of a bench at Our Lady Queen of Peace.
