Woodsville, NH- Mamie June Downer, 91, formerly of Mill Street, died following a period of declining health at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, NH, on Thursday, May 17, 2018.
Mamie was born in Newbury, VT on May 23, 1926, to James and Hazel (Ashford) Henderson. On August 19, 1944, she married William "Bill" H. Downer, Jr.
Mamie enjoyed riding with Bill in the truck and was a member of the New England Teamsters. An accomplished musician, she loved music, singing, playing for New Years Eve dances at the Woodsville Armory, and calling changes for dances in West Topsham. Each year, she and her mother played at the Fiddler's Contest. As a volunteer, she would play the piano at the senior center. Mamie was a good cook with donuts, pies, and stews, being her specialties. She loved holiday family gatherings and traveling with Gary, Linda, Bonnie, John, and Bill throughout the US and the Caribbean.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Bill Downer, on November 14, 2005; their son, Gary Downer on March 5, 2018 and his wife Linda Downer on September 20, 2013; a grandson, Bradley J. Downer, Jr. on July 31, 1986; a great great grandson, Aiden R. Pickering on November 24, 2015; and three siblings, Henry and Harvey Henderson and Madlyn Hatch; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Eaton.
She is survived by their children, Bonnie M. Butson and husband John of Bath, NH, Patricia A. "Patti" Fullerton and husband Dale of Bath, Marie H. Downer of Woodsville, and Bradley J. Downer and wife Debbie of Woodsville; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; a sister, Ramona Little of Northfield, NH; a sister-in-law, Barbara Rowe of Castleton, VT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
There will be an hour of calling time at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, on Thursday, May 24 from 1-2 PM with a funeral service immediately following at 2 PM with Melissa Gould as Funeral Celebrant.
Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Swiftwater Road, Woodsville.
