Obituary

Orford, NH – Marian Angela Lanefski Hook, 84, died October 23, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family. Born on May 12, 1928, in Stamford, CT, she was the daughter of Agnes Michelewicz and Stephen Lanefski. On May 4, 1946, she married Lester "Bud" Hook. In 1947, Marian and her husband Bud moved to Orford, NH. Prior to moving to Orford, she worked for the telephone company. Later she worked in Orford as a caregiver, and worked for Camp Merriwood, the Elm Corner Market, and Shaws Store in Orfordville. She eventually purchased Shaws Store and renamed it Brookside Store, operating it 6 days a week for 10 years until she sold it in 1979. Over the years, she was very active in the Orford Community as a member of: the PTA, a 4-H Leader, Fast Squad for 18 years, and Planning Board for 6 years. She helped with the Orford Fire Department's Fourth of July celebrations up until the Orford Community Field was no longer available. She was also a volunteer helping to get food and drinks to firemen during fires. She loved to shop, enjoyed vacations, read to her children, and being surrounded by her ever increasing sized family. You could find her for many years at the annual Orford Fireman's Flea Market, originally started by the Orford Fast Squad, either volunteering her services, shopping, or visiting. Last year she enjoyed her many Tuesdays and Saturdays at R&S Produce, (owned by Ruth Hook and Stephen Hook), in Fairlee, VT and recently just mentioned how much she missed the store. She was predeceased by her husband, Lester "Bud" Hook, a son (Joseph) John Lester Hook, five sisters Angela "Nell" Legg, Elizabeth "Betty" Obman, Helen Lane, Louise "Dolly" Gormley, and May Seymore, and four brothers Alphonse Lanefski, Anthony "Tony" Lane, John "Joe" Lanefski, and Stanley Lanefski. Marian is survived by three daughters, Ruth Hook and companion Bernie Dyer, Susan Taylor and husband Larry, both of Orford, and Martha Brosnahan and husband David of Keene, three sons James Hook, Bruce Hook and wife Betty and Stephen Hook and wife Teri, all of Orford. She also leaves 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, October 27th at 1 PM at the home of Stephen and Teri Hook, 2669 Route 25 A, Orford. A private burial will be held at the convenience of the family in East Orford Cemetery officiated by the Rev. Gail Dimick. One of Marian's passions was enjoying the local fireworks displays and especially going to Jaffrey, NH for the Annual ½ Hour Display set to music. Because of her love for Fireworks Displays and the Town of Orford, her family has established a savings account at Wells River Savings Bank in her memory to be used for Orford's 250th Celebration. Donations can be made "In Memory of Marian Hook", either at the Wells River Savings Bank, 540 US Route 5 North, Fairlee, VT 05045, or in care of Susan Taylor, 118 Indian Pond Road, Orford, NH 03777.
