Obituary

Peacham, VT- Maurice Franklin Chandler, 87, of the Bayley Hazen Road, died at his home on October 18, 2011. Maurice was born in Peacham on November 8, 1923, to John Gilman and Gertrude Marion (Peck) Chandler. He was a graduate of Peacham Academy. Maurice married Ruth Bartlett on June 20, 1948. He was a dairy farmer and later worked as a milk tester for the Vermont DHIA, retiring in 2001. Maurice served the Town of Peacham as Moderator, Selectman, and former Chair of the Board for 27 years. He was a member of the Peacham Board of Civil Authority and was still serving as a fence viewer. He received a commendation for his forty years of dedication as a public servant. He was a member of the Peacham Congregational Church where he had been a deacon, head usher, moderator and treasurer. Maurice was a 50 + year member of Washburn Masonic Lodge of Danville, VT. He belonged to, and was a former Master with the Lakeview Grange in West Barnet, VT, where he was currently the Overseer. He was a former board member of the Cabot Creamery. Maurice was a lifelong sugar maker and was especially partial to fancy syrup and sugar-on-snow. He enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Caledonia Farmers Market. He was a dynamic cribbage player. Above all, Maurice was a family man and truly enjoyed contributing to the annual family reunion that is held on the farm. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth B. Chandler on July 28, 2003; a grandson, Robby Blake; a brother, Clifton Chandler; a half-brother, George Chandler; and a half-sister, Marion Libby. He is survived by two daughters, Gloria J. Chandler and husband Francis L. Keith III of Pittsford, VT and Patricia N. Blake and husband Robert F. of West Rutland; two sons, Alan M. Chandler and wife Donna L. of Georgia, VT and Paul L. Chandler and wife Susan J. of Peacham; seven grandchildren, Mia Genovesi, Matthew Chandler and wife Jill, Nikole Chandler, Marc Chandler and partner Jonathan Brinkerhoff, Lindsay Chandler, Kristen Alexander, and Lindsay Baden; two great grandchildren, Bryce Chandler and Cody Unger; longtime friend and caregiver Ann Goss of Peacham; and nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be Friday, October 21, from 6-8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A funeral service will be Saturday, October 22, at 1 PM at the Peacham Congregational Church with Rev. Dr. Robert A. Potter officiating. Burial and a Masonic Service will follow in the Peacham Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Peacham Congregational Church (general operating fund); Church Street, Peacham, VT 05862.
