Bradford, VT- Melvin Curtiss Benzie, Sr., 84, a longtime Bradford resident, died on Saturday, December 13, 2014, at the Brookside Nursing Home, White River Junction, VT. Melvin was born in Calais, VT, on July 16, 1930, to James J. and Helen M. (Peck) Benzie. Following graduation from high school, he joined the US Navy. After discharge from the service, Melvin worked at HO Taylor Chevrolet in Wells River, VT. He then ran Benzie s Texaco Station on Main Street in Bradford for many years. Later, he retired as a rural mail carrier from the Bradford Post Office. Melvin was a member of the United Church of Christ in Bradford. He was a thirty year member of the Bradford Fire Department, serving as Chief for twenty of those years. He was on the Bradford FAST Squad and was an EMT for Upper Valley Ambulance. Melvin was proud to have worked on October 5, 1991, the day patients were transferred from the old Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital to the new Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. On June 9, 1952, Melvin married Delphine Wheeler and she predeceased him on December 9, 1985. He was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Tammy Piper on June 13, 2013 and by two sisters, his twin, Marilyn Irene Benzie and Ina Boucher. He is survived by two daughters, Marilyn I. Benzie of Barre, VT and Tina M. Benzie of Bradford; a son, Melvin C. Kurt Benzie, Jr. of Bradford; two granddaughters, Tina M. Foster and husband Jeff of Springfield, VT and Katie Bourgeois and husband Jason of Bradford; five great grandchildren, Dylan James Foster, Michael Curtiss Needham, Mary Jane Bourgeois, Anastase Dee Bourgeois, and Mazie Charlene Bourgeois; two sisters, Charlotte Fadden of North Haverhill, NH and Janet Puffer of Groton, VT; a brother, John Willard Benzie of Grand Rapids, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Calling hours will be on Friday, December 19 from 6-8 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A funeral service will be on Saturday, December 20 at 2 PM at the United Church of Christ, Bradford, VT, with Rev. Thomas Kinder, officiating. Burial will be in Upper Plain Cemetery, Bradford, in the spring 2015. Memorial contributions may be made to the newly established Melvin C. Benzie, Sr. Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Oxbow High School.
