Obituary

Marshfield, VT Miriam W. Evans, 91, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2009. She was born on April 13, 1917, in Burlington, VT, the daughter of Paul and Fanny Wright Whittemore. She attended Burlington public schools, graduated form Burlington High School and graduated from Green Mountain College, Class of 1937. After college Miriam worked for the University of Vermont Extension Service in Burlington. It was there that she met Ralph Evans, a DHIA milk inspector and student. She and Ralph married in Groton in November 1941. Over the next several years they lived in Randolph, farmed in Westford, VT and lived in Orono, ME where Ralph studied and taught. In 1950, Miriam and Ralph moved to Beverly, MA where Ralph managed the H.P. Hood Demonstration Farm at Cherry Hill. They continued at Cherry Hill for the next 17 years. During that time Miriam was very active with the North Beverly Second Congregational Church and in a variety of community outreach programs. In 1965, Ralph accepted a teaching position at Vermont Technical College and he and Miriam moved back to Randolph where they remained until retirement. During that time Miriam volunteered at Gifford Hospital, at Randolph Elementary School and she taught sewing to local 4-H clubs. Miriam was a very talented crafts person and seamstress and she showed great skill at traditional rug hooking. In 1978, Ralph and Miriam retired to Peacham Pond Road in Marshfield. Miriam was predeceased by her special brother Winston and her loving husband Ralph. She is survived by her daughter Gail and her husband George of Marshfield, her son Gary and his wife Susan of Danvers, MA; by four grandchildren including Jessica Evans of Danvers, MA, Betsy Evans of Ipswich, MA, Joseph Evans and his wife Noelle of Mineola, NY, Alex Africa of Marshfield, VT; by two great grandchildren, Nora and Cash; by a very special sister in law, Connie Whittemore, and by several very special and well thought of nieces, nephews, and friends. Funeral services will be conducted May 22, 2009, at 3PM at South Ryegate Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. M. Catherine Cook officiating. Memorial contributions in Miriam s memory may be made to the Central Vermont Humane Society, PO Box 687, Montpelier, VT 05601-0687.
