Newbury Center, VT Muriel Helen (Fortin) Williams, 77, passed away at her home on August 14, 2011 following a long illness. She was born December 20, 1933, the daughter of Clarence and Mabel (Osgood) Fortin in New London, CT. She attended schools in Ohio, Corinth and Bradford, VT, graduating from Bradford Academy in 1953. On April 11, 1954 Muriel married Paul Williams of Randolph Center, VT. She worked for the US Postal Service for 21 years, first as a clerk in East Corinth before retiring in 1985 as a rural carrier from West Topsham. After retiring she enrolled in college, first at Community College and then Vermont College, graduating in 1990 with a degree in education, obtaining a lifelong goal. She worked for a time at area schools, including the Blue Mountain Union School District. In her youth she was an active 4-H member and later a leader in East Corinth. She was a 50 year member of Riverside Grange in West Topsham and sang with the North Country Chorus for a time. She served on the Newbury School Board for three years and was a member of the Wells River Congregational Church, UCC since 1984, where she was active on committees and also sang in the choir. Muriel enjoyed square dancing with Paul at the Connecticut Valley Swingers Club, and also enjoyed painting classes. She produced many beautiful paintings for her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years Paul; a son Kenneth and wife Michelina of Austin, TX, his daughter Alina Miranda of Florida; son Brent and wife Kathleen of Wells River, their daughter Nichole, his daughter Kristin and husband Andrew of Burlington, VT; daughter Carol and husband Gerry Suich, their children Gilliann and Wiatt of Vershire, VT; daughter Beth and husband Timothy White and their children Kassia and Garrett of Lebanon, NH; and daughter Malinda and husband Robert B. Taylor of Bradford, and their children Christopher P. of Bradford and Cassandra of Burlington, VT; two nephews Kevin and Carl Shelton and a niece Roxanne Shelton. She was predeceased by her parents and her two brothers Donald Fortin and Robert Shelton. A memorial service will be held at the Wells River Congregational Church, UCC, 76 Main Street, Wells River, on Wednesday, August 31st, at 2 PM with Pastor Elizabeth J.A. Siwo-Okundi officiating.
