Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul "Butch" J. Gibson, 69, of Monroe, NH, who died unexpectedly at home on Saturday, February 8, 2025.

Butch was born on August 7, 1955, the first son and second of six children, to Elwyn and Theresa "Becky" Gibson. Raised on the Monroe family farm, Butch's roots came to define every aspect of his life. His childhood was filled with the simple joys and mishaps of farm life, instilling a work ethic and appreciation for nature.

He graduated Woodsville High School in 1973 where he played the snare drum as a member of the Mclure Student Band. After high school, he participated in a men's softball league and competed alongside his father and various friends at local horseshoe pits. He always enjoyed coon hunting (with Blueticks, Smokey & Katie), snowmobiling, fishing, ice fishing, watching NASCAR, building, tinkering (there wasn't much he couldn't fix) and maple sugaring.

A keystone of the Monroe community, a simple hard-working man; Butch retired in December of 2018, having dedicated 45 years of service as Road Agent, a role that also involved maintaining the public water system. For years, he spent summer weeknights working for the Stimson Farm (then in-laws), Bath, NH. Recently, he hauled gravel for the town of Barnet and found pleasure in curating a small sugarbush on family land; a passion in partnership with his good friend, Skip Brill.

Butch wore many hats throughout his lifetime, almost as many as he had in his collection. Not only was he a husband, father and grandfather, but he was a brother, uncle, and friend. Butch was a gentle soul; always willing to help, even at his own expense. He spent his last bit of life providing full-time care for his wife, Senya, who he loved without measure.

We will remember him in white-out conditions, through blustery winds and the rumble of a plow. The prick of a blackberry thorn and the drip of springtime sap will remind us of his will to persevere and find joy in the subtle. He is survived by his wife Senya; his daughters, Kinsley (Nathan) Sicard, and Jaime (Ryan) Anderson; his grandchildren, Livinnia Anderson, Lucien and Daela Sicard; his siblings, Karen Gibson, Doug Gibson and family, Peter Gibson and family, Cynthia (Ed) Chrobak and family, and Diane Gibson Smith and family; his first wife and mother of his daughters, Laurel Theriault; his sister in-law Francesca "Frannie" Paddleford; his closest friends, Skip Brill and Joe (Janese) Locke. He is predeceased by his parents Elwyn and Theresa "Becky" Gibson; his friends, Larry Cate and Tom Bedell.

Butch was proud of his two daughters, Kinsley and Jaime, who recall spending the best of times, outdoors with their dad; fishing in his aluminum canoe/ice shanty, stacking wood, riding the snapper, camping, berry picking, digging snow tunnels and especially, escaping for long snow buggy rides with a warm noon meal of roasted dogs and smores. Butch was blessed with three beautiful grandchildren, who he loved, and took pride in; they will know life's simple pleasures in part due to Butch's legacy.

With love and remembrance, a memorial service will be held at the Monroe Village Church at 10:30am on Saturday, March 1st. Following the service, family and friends are invited to gather at the Monroe Town Hall for a warm meal, refreshments and storytelling. Bring your photos, good cheer and maybe even a sweet treat to share. Memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe Methodist Church or Public Library.
