North Haverhill, NH – Paula A. (Riley) Volk, 82, passed away at Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill NH on May 30, 2024, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. She resided at Grafton County Nursing Home for almost five years, receiving excellent and compassionate care. She was formerly a resident of Groton, VT although spent many years living in Derry, NH; Warwick, RI; and Gainesville, FL.
She was born June 27, 1941, in Providence, RI to Lester A. Riley and Nora C. (Shannon) Riley. She graduated from Saint Patrick's High School in Providence, RI in 1959 and spent her childhood in the greater Providence area. She married Paul F. Volk on September 5, 1960, with whom she had four children, Paul Jr., Peter, Maryellen, and Erik. They were divorced shortly after the birth of their last child, and she raised all four children on her own. She spent most of her career as a bookkeeper including many years with American Universal Life Insurance in Providence, RI, and Maddox Foundry in Archer, Florida, but also worked additional part-time positions to support her family.
She was a strong-willed, feisty, generous woman who loved to make people laugh but also would not tolerate people who tried to take advantage of her. She enjoyed cooking, good food, puzzles, traveling, birdwatching, good conversation, and was an avid dog-lover.
She is survived by her daughter Maryellen Volk of Derry, NH, her son Erik Volk and husband Philip Coutu of Monroe, NH, and a cousin Ellen O'Connell and husband David of West Chester, PA. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as by her sons Peter Volk and Paul F. Volk, Jr., and her beloved grand-dog Biscotti.
A private family service will be held and there will be no calling hours.
