East Ryegate, VT- Phyllis Jean Keenan, 69, of Keenan Lane, died at her home on Sunday, May 13, 2012, following a courageous battle with cancer. Phyllis was born in Columbia, NH, on April 18, 1943, to Ralph A. and Althea (Riley) Hammond. After attending McIndoe Falls Academy for three years, Phyllis graduated from Woodsville High School in 1961. She then attended and graduated from Pierce Business College, Concord, NH. On June 23, 1962, Phyllis married Paul in the Monroe Methodist Church. Along with being a homemaker, Phyllis drove school buses for Elmer Chamberlin in Monroe. She hand-laced shoes at home for the Henshel Shoe Corporation of Littleton, NH. She and her husband were owners of Paul s Whistle Stop in McIndoe Falls, VT. Phyllis was a member of the Monroe Community Church and was active in church events and suppers. She always worked at and supported the Lord s Acre Auction. She played clarinet in McLure s Alumni Band, was a 4-H leader with the Hunt Mt. 4-H Club in Monroe, sang with the Monroe Mellotones and the Methodist Church choir, and volunteered at the West Barnet Senior Meal Site. Along with her husband, Paul, she was named as Citizen of the Year for the Blue Mt. Grange in 2010. In her spare time, she enjoyed flower gardening, knitting socks, scarves, and hats, quilting, watching wildlife and feeding the birds. She enjoyed supporting her grandchildren at all of their events. Phyllis was predeceased by her father, Ralph Hammond on October 10, 2003; her mother, Althea (Riley) Hammond on December 19, 2004; her daughter, Pamela Jean Keenan on May 31, 1997, and by a sister, Virginia Cinnamond on February 6, 2012. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Paul Keenan of Ryegate; two sons, David P. Keenan and wife Beverly of Lyndonville, VT and Matthew S. Keenan and wife Karen of Jaffrey, NH ; five grandchildren, Ashley Keenan, Scott and Staci Keenan, and Danny and Andrew Keenan; four sisters, Gloria A. Moore of Monroe, NH, Edith Craig of Vail, AZ, Barbara Farr and husband Maynard of Monroe, and Mary Hatch and husband Paul of Enosburg Falls, VT; brother-in-law, Dick Cinnamond of Monroe; sister-in-law, Alice Frazer of Monroe; brother-in-law, Robert Keenan of East Ryegate; an aunt; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held in the Monroe Community Church, Woodsville Road, Monroe, NH, on Friday, May 18, at 2 PM, with Rev. Dr. Donald Thomas, officiating.
