Obituary

Newbury, VT- Robert Alfred Erickson, 90, of Snake Road, died on Monday, June 2, 2013 at the Mt. Ascutney Hospital in Windsor, VT. Robert was born in Boston, MA on January 31, 1923, to Elmer Eric and Ethel Maud (Winch) Erickson. He graduated from Watertown High School, Class of 1941 and from the Mass. Maritime Academy, Class of 1943. He was one of the youngest instructors at the Academy, teaching celestial navigation. He served in the US Navy from December 27, 1943 through January 10, 1946 and was honorably discharged with a rank of Lieutenant (JG). Following his time in the service, he worked for New England Telephone, becoming a computer systems analyst in the early 1960 s. Robert and his wife, the former Margaret McAnally, to whom he was married on June 27, 1945, lived in Watertown, MA for nearly fifty years before moving to West Newbury twenty years ago. He was a member of the West Newbury Congregational Church, the Rotary Club, the Mass. Maritime Alumni Association, and the Yankee Male Chorus. He was active with both the Orange East Senior Center in Bradford, VT and the Horse Meadow Senior Center in North Haverhill, NH and helped assemble Thanksgiving and Christmas meals in the Newbury and Bradford area. He participated in the Paddle the Border events. He was an avid traveler, criss-crossing the country while camping, several times. He loved nature, hiking, and being with his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Erickson on January 23, 2006, and his son David Alan Erickson in October 1952. He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Beloungie and husband Lance of Caribou, ME, Judy Robinson and husband David of Saxtons River, VT, and Janet Erickson and partner Greg Brickman of Sausalito, CA; one son, Steve Erickson and wife Jeanne of Warren, NH; five grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Hirtle and husband Bert of Alexandria, NH; a brother, Alan Erickson and wife June of Weston, MA; and nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be on Saturday, June 8 from 4-6 PM at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, NH. A memorial service will be on Monday, June 10 at 1 PM at the West Newbury Congregational Church, with Rev. Cynthia Batten officiating.
