Obituary

Haverhill, NH – Roger Kenneth Brickner, 94, died peacefully on Friday, March 21, 2025, at his home due to complications from a stroke.

Roger was born on August 27, 1930, the son of Charles Brickner and Gertrude Duerr Brickner in Jamaica Hospital in Richmond Hill, Queens, NYC.

Roger attended PS 54 in Richmond Hill; JHS 171 in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn; Richmond Hill HS, Queens; and Queens College, Flushing, Queens. After two years in the Army, serving in combat in Korea, and attaining the rank of Sgt. First Class, he attended Columbia University in NYC.

He returned to Richmond Hill HS as a teacher and Guidance Counselor from 1954 – 1967. In 1960 and 1964, he supervised mock political conventions (Republican and Democratic). He ran for Congress from Queens' 6CD in 1962 and, from 1964 – 1965, taught at Brooklands College in Weybridge, Surrey, England.

He transferred to Cardozo HS (Bayside, Queens) in 1967 and served there as a Guidance Counselor and Chairman of Social Studies until 1982 when he retired.

He enjoyed traveling all his life, having visited 122 countries. He took thousands of photographs. He was a camera enthusiast since his teenage years. Another hobby was the weather, an interest spurred on by his experience of the hurricane of 1938. In 1980 he wrote a book, "The LI Express", on that hurricane in 1938. He also wrote two volumes on "NYC Weather, 1609 – 2005".

His first 'project' when he retired was to walk the entire Appalachian Trail from 1982 – 1987. His most ambitious trip was flying around the world from January to April 2006.

He lived in Queens and Manhattan up to 2014, but his primary home since 1989 has been Haverhill, NH.

Roger was baptized a Methodist but has attended the West Newbury Congregational Church in Vermont, the Congregational Church in Haverhill, the Methodist Church in North Haverhill, and the Marble Collegiate Church in Manhattan.

Roger is the last survivor of the Brickner family in America.
