Woodsville, NH Ronald H. Smith, 66, of Chapel Street, died Saturday, January 3, 2015, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born in Haverhill, NH, April 7, 1948, a son of Lionel E. and Genevieve I. (Beamis), and was a life long area resident. Following graduation from Haverhill Academy, he attended the East Coast Air Tech and later joined the US Navy serving from November 29, 1968 to November 27, 1972. He was stationed aboard the supercarrier USS Forrestal CV-59 where he was a plane captain. From August 1973 until his retirement in July 2004 he worked as a corrections officer at the Grafton County Jail, North Haverhill, NH. Ron was the only corrections officer ever provided the rank of Master Sergeant, a designation that was also retired upon his retirement. He retired with the rank of Captain. He loved NASCAR, pitching horseshoes, camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a 41 year member of Ross-Wood American Legion Post # 20 of Woodsville. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Lionel and Genevieve Smith; a son, Ronald Ronnie Smith; and a brother Robert Smith. Survivors include his two sons, Ronson Smith and wife Kimberly of Groton, VT and Sean Miller and wife Kim of Piermont, NH; five grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Kahlen Smith, Ashlyn Finnemore, and Chase and Ryan Miller; a great grandson, Jax; two sisters, Linda Gooden of Lisbon and Brenda Jewett of North Haverhill; two brothers, Terry Smith of Conway, NH, and Wayne Smith of North Haverhill; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins; and his former wife and caregiver Virginia Sullivan of Woodsville. There will be no calling hours. A celebration of Ron s life will be planned for the Spring of 2015.
