Obituary

Pike, NH -- Stephen E. Smas, 72, died on July 26, 2015 after a brief illness. Steve was born December 18, 1942 in Grasmere, NH to Stephen and Barbara (Phillips) Smas. After high school, he joined the US Air Force where he was an Airman 2nd Class working on jet engines. While he was stationed Fort Dix, NJ, he met the love of his life, Sue Wargo, whom he married and happily welcomed three sons with in Freehold, NJ. In 1974, he started his Postal Service career in NJ before moving his family to NH where he worked different positions in the Hanover, NH office, including philatelic sales and eventually retired in 2002 as Postmaster of Monroe, NH, not long after Sue's unexpected death. Steve's passions included gardening, restoring Ford tractors, traveling, finding the best chicken parmesan dinners at local restaurants and creating solutions with materials he had on hand. He will always be remembered for keeping busy with projects and being able to fix anything and a passion for a filling breakfast/lunch/dinner at a great price. He was predeceased by a brother, Channing Salvas. He is survived by his wife, Joan Smas, of Johnson City, NY, sons Steven E Smas and wife Jenniffer of Haverhill, NH, Scott E Smas and wife Jodi of Tempe, AZ and Sean E Smas and wife Megan of Piermont, NH. His grandchildren were a point of pride and joy: Trevor, Rebacca, Katharine and Connor along with his adopted grandchildren: Cody, Jackie, Liz, Tom, Brian, Eric, Megan, Ben, Maggie and newest addition Naya Lyn. Steve is also survived by his brothers & sisters: Sherrill Smas and wife Bonnie of Blacksburg, VA, Judy Shaw of Palm Beach FL, Barbara Jean Colby of Weare NH , Glenna Torrey of Weare NH and sister-in-law Sally Weber and husband Larry of Freehold, NJ. SERVICES: There are no calling hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday August 29, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Horse Meadow Senior Center, North Haverhill NH. The Rev. Patricia Williams will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society.
